Easy they challenge some one in a 2.5lt car with a hairdrier bolted to it and then show them what an S2 back end looks like when it's getting smaller and smaller and smaller and then the hairdrier kicks in and it stops getting smaller as quickly.

Precisely this. Exactly and precisely this. Damn right - they do this. And then they watch the look of bemusement on the face of the hairdrier-owner in their rear-view mirror ...
BTW I'd like to publicly declare my love for colin944 and feel assured that we are brothers. He is right in all that he says. All aspects. Everything. Particularly about S2's. [
(colin944, I take back all the nasty things I said about you. I'm even sorry about the incident with the wetsuit and the bucket of soapy frogs. OK?)

By the way, what do S2 owners do if they want to drive fast? Use another car I suppose? 210 bhp is hardly enough in a hatchback these days...
They use their moderator power to compensate for their lack of horsepower by deleting turbo owners who upset them. [
Joking aside, we just enjoy overtaking slow cars without needing to change down a gear. [8|]

No they just drive it, instead of waiting for a week for the turbo to come back from the specialist because it had a vacuum leak... and 'other' issues...[

The 968 Turbo wasn't a big seller but at £75k in the early nineties, not a great surprise!

Generally you shouldn't drive an S2 around in 1st gear all the time, but I suppose it does have the benefit that you have some overtaking ability when you need it.
In reality you just need to be better at throttle control and gearshifting to drive a turbocharged car, statistics show 70% of S2 owners don't have the necessary mental capacity to drive a turbocharged 944, the other 30% don't know that turbochargers exist but 100% of them would buy a turbocharged 944 if they did...

As I witnessed first hand on the way back from Silverstone to Cirencester as I was waiting for the turbine to spool up ......[
I didnt even know Nick had sold the turbo - I really should pay more attention ! [&:]

I know what Turbos are and how they work. You get them on lorrys and diesel engines.

I do get the "instant power" thing of a normally aspirated car, it's just that 210 bhp isn't enough to excite. My 6.0 lt Diablo gave over 500 bhp of normally aspirated power, and yes, that felt fast. But not as fast as an F40 (which is turbo powered).
I really, really enjoyed my S2, and my S2 cabrio, but they just weren't particularly fast or exciting. Given that for a modest outlay the turbo boost can be reduced and the powered increased to 100bhp or so over the normally aspirated car, what's not to like?
I've never driven a 968 CS, and maybe I should. Perhaps 250 bhp of normally aspirated power is exactly "our" cars need to be spot on. The problem is I don't really like the looks of the 968 when compared to the cleaner front of the 944.

'Nods with approval' I know exactly what you mean. For me it was the lack of mid range torque in the S2 that I didn't like. Drive something like the 290hp 3.0 M3 and you'll immediately understand, a sharp poke of the toe in the M3 results in immediate thrust and a pull on the neck muscles. The S2 feels like you have to wind it up to go fast.
Also Diablo?? Do tell more. What was it like to own? What other interesting cars have you owned?
P.s. Before one of the S2 boys comments, try following a turbo on a third gear overtake. Sitting at 3500-4k rpm in a turbo and flooring it when you see a gap you'd need to be at 5000rpm+ to get the same effect out of an S2
