My 911 Turbo is now 5 days old!

Today is the 5th day that I have owned my 911 Turbo. The car has now done 1250 miles since I collected it at the Stuttgart factory on Monday.
I can recommend collecting new cars from the factory, the trip is professionally organised and is very enjoyable.
Following a short flight from Heathrow we arrived at Stuttgart and were promptly taken by Taxi to a 4* hotel in the city. A pleasant meal in the Restaurant (Included) was followed by a good nights sleep. We were picked up at 9:00 the next morning for a 20 minute Taxi trip to the factory. On arrival we were welcomed and invited to visit the museum which is full of famous road and race cars.
At 10:00 the factory tour started which lasted for 90 minutes. This involved a tour of the engine and car production lines. It demonstrated the skilled workforce and the variations in the cars being produced. The relatively small site the factory occupied surprised me together with the fact that all models are made at the same time on the same production line.
We were taken back to the Customer Collection Centre where we were individually taken to our cars. The handover was very detailed and lasted about an hour with the PCM taking up a good proportion of this time.
A photo that had already been taken of the handover was given to us as we departed for lunch at a restaurant on site.
Following a quick lunch (Too much excitement!) we walked back to the Collection Centre and drove the car out of the factory gates at 14:30.
After a 199 mile drive and a stop for petrol (The car came with a full tank "" never had that before) we arrived at the Nurburgring. I had already checked to make sure the Ring was open to public. We purchased a 6 lap ticket for 76 Euros and 2 Hours 40 minutes after leaving the factory we started the first lap! The Ring on public days is a toll road and I had already checked at the factory that the Porsche insurance covered the Ring.
Using a maximum of 5000 revs and being very gentle on the Brakes we drove the 6 laps. Between each I let the car cool down for about 10 minutes. The first lap Bridge to gantry was 9 minutes 55 sec and the last 9 minutes 10 sec. With the car run in and the driver more used to the car I would expect a much faster lap.
The evening was spent in the cockpit bar of the Dorient Hotel with our rooms overlooking the GP grid. We left for Calais at 7:45 and arrived at Euro Tunnel at 11:55. Porsche had given us a Club Class ticket which I had not used before. Next time I will check to see the premium they charge as it was quite good.
On Friday I drove the car to Donington Park to attend a BRSCC track day with my Caterham R500. However I did manage to take the car around the circuit for a number of laps. The car handled very well and the 450 BHP was put to full use!
This afternoon we drove back from the circuit after suffering a broken fuel pump on the R500 8 laps from the end and 24 seconds in the lead. The car is such a driver's car that a few extra miles of twisty roads were obligatory!
Having previously owned a Ferrari 360 I can honestly say that this is a much better driver's car. It is also nice not to have everybody looking as you drive past.

What a superb experince that seems Richard [8D]

I take it you are quite an experienced track driver and know your way round the Ring better than my novice abilities because I caned my 944 Turbo round 12 laps last year and a video camera had my bridge to gantry time as 10:05

I know I' m 200bhp down [] but you were only running yours in for gawds sake!

Well done

I am not sure how to post Jpeg files.

I have done many miles around the Nurburgring in my Caterham R500 and Radical SR3. My best time is 8 min 4 secs for the full circuit.

I just discovered that my 2004 includes a Turbo Cabriolet - the order form went to AFN last week and I now await a delivery date...

Congratulations on your new toy Richard, I' ve had my Turbo for four months now
& I LOVE this car, grunt, grip & grin' s in equal measure. The only problem is I fear for my license !! You are a brave man taking it to the track out of the box, get ready for some high oil consumtion during your ownership, mind you probably a small price to pay for dawdling for 1000 miles !! ENJOY.

In the Customer Collection centre.

3000 miles now and the only problems have been the PCM phone not allowing SIM commands starting with a * or # and catching the front Aerokit 4 times.
Awesome performance!
I have not had the opportunity to drive on track recently. I was going to drive the car at Goodwood last Friday but took the SR3 instead. Goodwood in a Turbo must be a high speed commitment drive. What sort of lap times will a Turbo do at the track? I

Richard,
Turbo 996 came past me at Goodwood. Mind you he did have two wheels on the grass he was trying hat hard. I decide cowardice was the better part of valour and chose not to be part of his accident. We lap in 1:28 or 1:29 so a Turbo 996 has to be pedalling pretty hard to get by. Vic Sinex and his GT2 were at Goodwood for the GT3 day and we were lapping in similar times. I couldn' t catch him and he couldn' t get away!
Handling of the 996 near the limit means you have to be 1/. Brave 2/. Derek Bell or 3/. Ready to die!
Heavy car with all the surround sound, jacuzzi, wine cellar etc.
Awesome for long journeys though.

I d much rather be rubbed on the chest .............and it would have been rude to upset any more GT3 owners on their day ,Mel told me to behave ! Last laugh urs put in 2 nd going into Eau Rouge last week at least one head [on the car ] with nothing inside ,awaiting further report ,hope to be back by Silverstone in July, other wise its the rs ,! Just send money !

I am the ' Sinex' Gary refers too, one Goldtrack Silverstone earlier this year, i was in ur pit with ur radical. My 993 gt2 in the hands of someone like yourself will do Goodwood in 1: 24 without stress, trying abt 1: 22................some truth in Garys comment [ i am not giving him credit for anything except a well organised day!] quickest i can manage is about 1 :26 ...............i am very old ................oh by the way mine has 525 bhp /746 nm .

Vic,

Sounds expensive. I thought I heard a loud bang the other day coming from the general direction of Belgium. Obviously it was you!
Would you be interested in re-visiting Spa at end of September. We are trying to get a group package.
My contact details are in PP or ask the " Ferret" aka Dr. Damp

Guys,

I thought you were not supposed to time youself on PCGB track days ?

However a ' spectator' did tell me at Goodwood last saturday the the blue GT3 with all the sticky tape on the front was doing 1.26' s and I was apperantly in the low 1.33' s in my C4S which I can assure you was not any where near its limit. For instance I was lifting for Fordwater otherwise I was running out of revs in 4th before no name and I didn' t fancy changing up to 5th and back down again. Lavent corner was very slippy due to the new blacktop breaking up so taking it easy there which must compromise speed along the straight and as final evindence the couple of laps where I left PSM on the only time the warning light came on was when the traction control cut in coming out of the chicane.

Therefore lots to come and I' m giving away a 100bhp to a turbo which must be awesome around Goodwood.

The GT3 in Iris Blue and Bin liner black is owned by John Page. I doubt the 1:26 as I know John pretty well and I can normally lap in the same sort of times as him 1;28/1.29 more likely. The car is running on Michelin Cup tyres. These make a big difference because you can brake later and carry a lot of speed through the corners. Goodwood is fast and dangerous. Just before our GT3 day earlier this year one of our guys went in backwards at the end of Lavant. About £12,000 of damage. We can time ourselves as the days are not officially recognised by PCGB. Oh and they are a lot cheaper. EG - Silverstone GP, Brands GP, Oulton Park, Donington all for £197.00/day and there is not a catch!
