I had to remove the O/S/R wheel arch liner only to find mud
packed on the ledge.
Jet washed it out as well as the N/S.
Mud is our enemy it holds salt.
 
This is a very common collection point for dirt on a 997.
I recently removed mine and found a similar amount of mud, could have potted a small plant with both sides- but the body sealant in this area is excellent and corrosion is rare unless previous accident repair. After removing the mud and cleaning with muc-off and a steam cleaner, I used lanoguard as additional protection which is an excellent product and would last well behind the plastic.
