Moving to the dark side.....

Took the plunge into 996 ownership yesterday! I bought a 130k mile Carrera 4 in silver with grey leather interior. Only downside is it has run the crank by shagging 2 big ends and 1 main bearing so requires a small engine rebuild. Car was hideously cheap though so how could I refuse! Will get pics up tomorrow when I pick it up (from 50 yards round the corner!!!)

Would I ever do a thing like that Rob? Noticed the car at a garage round the corner and went in to chat to the garage owner who gave me the guys details. One phone call and sold!

Sounds great but here's hoping your order of rebuilds looks like this; 944T and then take your pick from a 911 SC, 996, E-Type, numerous bikes etc..... [;)]

Alasdair,

good find, will be a nice addition to your fleet. I suppose you'll need a bit more space to store all of your cars. Just sell all your 944 parts cheaply to me...... [8|]

You only bought it to fit your refurbed c4 wheels.

I want one next, 944 could be for sale soon.

Alan.

It must be fate Alan, save Jim hassling me with putting them on the Silver Rose! Am getting it next week now so pics will have to wait.

Are you planning to do the engine rebuild yourself Alasdair? As soon as somebody somewhere puts together a reasonably priced 996 engine rebuild offer to remove the RMS issue they will be quids in!

CS wheels or Cups on a Silverose Al " Thats the Rules "
Second what Benny said a cheap engine build on the 996 would see you packing the day job in, still a cheap car when you get it fettled.

Will do it myself. At the end of the day it is just an engine. Got a copy of the manual sent up today for some weekend evening perusal. Will maybe get the Hartech liner clamps done due to the mileage but will have a look over the engine when I get it back.
I think the RMS problem may be down to wobbly crankshaft as the one I bought has had 5 seals in it apparently. With the crank trashing the centre bearings, it may explain why the seal has been leaking. I think a carefully assembled engine with later style Hyvo chain IMS and crank will be good for 100,000 miles, more than I will ever probably do in it. As people say, only 5 to 10% of cars have been effected so there are plenty of ones out there that are fine.

Alisdair,
congratulations, thats the way to buy 'em if you are handy with the spanners and have a mind of your own.

They don't have the reputation of a strong engine, but I have often wondered if its abuse, some previous owner thrashing it cold for example, or labouring it in 6th at 900 rpm. They do have more power than the Carrera 3.0 thru to 964 engines, and if abused that could be the cause of the bad press.

Is there room for a 996TT in it? - stunning Q-Car[:)] (budget GT2)

good luck

Nice car Al. Youre quite rught it is just an engine, loads of people seem to be under the impression that they have mythical internals but we know that an engine is just that and not to be scared of them..

More than I paid for the car. A new crank from Porsche is 4K. I have managed to get a late style crank and new style IMS for £1300 complete with carrier.
