(MOT) NCT Fail - But not too bad !

Hi Lads
Just back from the dreaded NCT test. I wasnt expecting to pass but she failed on 3 items

Cracked headlight - I have new lenses but I need the mounting frames .. I have these on my scrap 924's. The lenses now are not the correct ones as the car was originally fitted with sealed beam units in the USA and the mounting rings are different. I need 2 477-941-046-00

Both rear lapbelts were stiff on the inertia reels I never thought about this at all - A bit of WD40 will cure this. I was afraid they might get me to change them to 3 point

Flexible Brake hose crazed/perished - I am glad they picked this up in fairness as this is a major safety item ! I am going to get the 4 flexis done and fluid change now to be sure

A surprise was the suspension which had 0% side slip - Thanks to the Hartech wisbones and the shocks/springs which had an imbalance of 2% in the front and 1% in the rear ! thats the original Konis for ya

The highlight was the waiting room ! the inspector called out "Porsche 944 88-D-32136" I waited a wee while to watch people look around to see who had the Porsche. Then I put the chest out and said "Excuse Me - Excuse Me" No Nissan Almera for me ... (Just my little moment of out and out snottyness and distain for lesser beings. I am not like this at all really [:D])

The NCT inspector said he took his time and declared that the car was "In really good order for her age" and told me she would "walk the retest"[;)]

I will have to post up pics of my LED sidelight/ Markerlight modifications to bring it up to NCT requirements ! It really looks cat but when I get the retest it will be put back to original !

Donal,

You failed, but that sounds like a good result. Well done. Particularly good that they spotted those perished brake hoses. But I don't understand this bit:

"A surprise was the suspension which had 0% side slip - Thanks to the Hartech wisbones and the shocks/springs which had an imbalance of 2% in the front and 1%"

What's suspension side slip, and how do they test it (and why is it important)? I don't think there is such a thing in the UK MOT.

As far as your broken headlight glass goes, is this helpful?

It's a very easy job - much easier than you'd expect.

Oli.

The side-slip test jiggles teh car about and measures play in the suspension and bushes and stuff.. If yu had dodgey wheelbearings or excessive play around the bushes or balljoints this will pick it up...

You can get the NCT manual online here http://www.nct.ie/the_test.html

That information on teh headlights is gold dust Oli and really appreciated.. A big Cheers for that..... [;)]

Again I am going to the work at Dave's under supervision of course. That will be another few jobs to add to my training log [:D]

Sorry to hear she didn't pass first time Donal, but those few advisories are so minor you should have it retested in no time at all [:D]

.....and what's wrong with my Nissan Almera ? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Back for retest this morning... ! Car flew it no problems

Issues all sorted - Had a good day last Friday.. Refurbed teh calipers myself - new plates, new pads, new sensors and new flexis !

I told the OPC (Agnews in Belfast) not to tell me the price - Just tell me if my card isnt accepted [:D]

The brakes are nothing short of stupendous - Again lads top advice and tips enabled me to do the work myself !

Now to put her lights back the way they should be and put the batwing back on

Nowt wrong with an Almera Paul but did you check the front crossmember behind the radiator recently ?[;)]

Good news Donal well done.

How long is the NCT good for? And how long can you afford to tax her for![:(][:-]

Cheers

Thanks Mike

The NCT is up until 28-Mar-13. The car was first registered on the 28-Mar-1988 and its 1 year from the date of first registration so if I put the car up in Feburary the NCT would only last 1 month.. A real stupid system but typical of this country. A car thats less than 10 years ols gets 2 years and a car over 10 gets one year

The MOT is a far fairer system as its 1 year from the date of test..

Id love to tax it for 6 months but I will tax her for 3 and then get a sneaky month out of her (that will take me to August) . If the tax is more than 3 months out the Gardai can sieze the car.

Read it and weep lads [:'(] ..
