MOT fail!

I'm sad to say my 944s failed today for the following..

Lower steering joint excessive play
Front flexi hose corrotion
Brake balance out by 36%

I plan to do the work myself - luckily I have 2 weeks off work! So any advise would be great!

For the steering joint I have brought a new shaft from desing911, has anyone had any experience in replacing these?

For the brake balance the pads and discs are not too worn so will have a look at the caliper, thought I would get a caliper seal set and give it all a good clean up to see if that works.

Just ordered a set of stainless hoses too.

Will probably do a brake fluid change while im in there, any recomondation on fluid for everyday use? Dot 4 ok


On a good note, not a mention of rust anywhere with original sills on the car still!

Steering shaft U/J should be easy enough, I think access is ok, we did Rob's although from memory the intake and cyclinder head was missing at the time!
 
Yea o can see how having the head Removed would help:)! Can you remember if you had to losen or remove the rack to get the lower joint free? And once both joint are free is there enough room to just slide it out?

Good point, yes from memory we had loosened the rack bolts but not completely removed. Hopefully someone can give a second opinion too as Rob was removing the engine in his plenty of bits were stripped out so dont want you thinking it's easier than it may be![;)] - but I'm pretty certain that's all else you'll need to do
 
My S2 failed this year on brake balance due to standing for 3 months while I was ill basically the garage stripped the calipers on the front cleaned and replaced everything and it was ok.

Subsequently replaced the front discs and pads and checked the calipers still moving freely but should be an easy job for you to do, most of my brake lines have been replaced along with the fuel lines over the last four years so worth doing and again easy enough if you can get the couplings out or apart. Brake fluid, the previous owner had used ATE blue high temp fluid so that is what I replaced any that was lost with, think from memory it is a different make up to normal fluid and less likely to corrode the system.
 
How much was the lower joint, I have a little bit of play in mine and I'm wondering if mine needs changing.
 
I paid £79 from design911, the spec said it was a Porsche part too, it comes as set set piece, I.e the top and bottom joints and the shaft.
 
Is that £79 plus VAT though? (And you definitely didn't buy the cheaper LHD one) ;)

If not, bargain.
 
Ha! Just made me check my order to make sure it was for RHD! But yea sorry the price was £78.88 plus vat so will be about £94 all in. Still about half the price I was expecting for it!
 
For future reference the "Fast Part Finder" on Design911's website is brilliant as it gives you the current price of the item from Porsche directly. Amusingly it's nearly always cheaper than Design911 sell it too.

Am I missing something obvious here as I cant seem to find the fast parts finder?

Right, found the fast parts finder but its not giving me the OPC price. I have discovered that the price of a balance shaft belt for an S2 engine is a mere £102 +vat, what a bargain.
 
Yup, the price quoted is the official Porsche price (although they're often a smidgen out of date) before any PCGB discount is taken off.

Balance belt - Euro Car Parts and see if the 30% off code works.
