hiya,my old girl is coming up for her mot shortly,thought i had another advisory "clean sheet" on last mot but slight play in front wheel bearing,both drivers and pass side were my advisorys,so will have this attended to along with a new back wiper and sunroof actuators not extending so wont lock sunroof but thats about it, only did just over 1000miles since last mot,is getting the wheel bearings sorted a big job?[same mot station tests her every year] thanks,,regards jason p

before changing them try just adjusting, wheel bearings tend to need adjusting now and then, however if the bearings are very old then it may be prudent to at least check them for any signs of bluing , if none then they may just need re-packing with grease and tightened up, to Porsche spec of course.

thanks for replys all,, i need to address the more serious fact which is i need to drive the car much more,when being used on a regular basis, it seems those little niggly problems dont arise [sunroof for example,never had a problem when in reguler use], so off to mot next week,bearings and other bits attended to,,thanks jason p

I had the same advisory last month, last Friday she went into OPC for a free complimentary health check the only 2 items noted was sticking handbrake warning light switch and minor play in steering UJ joint.
Might worth a double check?

Wheel bearings are tapered and easily adjusted. In fact very easy to remove the hub and regrease bearings. just before taking it for the MOT tighten the bearings so no play in them. Once MOT passed then slacken off so there is just a slight wobble can be felt when holding the top and bottom of the wheel (temporarily replace the wheel). You will see why there is a notched out bit to allow an allen key to be inserted into the tightener.

Guy used too little heat because he had to hammer a lot. When you heat the hub properly that much hammering is not needed. I use heat gun instead of torch.

Wrong way to test bearings if wobbling the wheel around the centre.
The correct way is hands at 3 and 9 and pull the wheel back and forth without wobbling it, this shows excess play. Hands top and bottom and rocking/wobbling the wheel will exagerate the small play (required) in the bearing and actually leads to overtight bearings.
