Models from 1974 or 1975

Hi,
Newbie member here, still not a Porsche Owner, but hopefully soon !
I'm looking for a 1974 or 75 model of a 911SC, as I can import this to Ireland without a heavy penalty of registration tax.
Can anyone recommend a "good" model for a first 911, for light use as 3rd car.
I'm no car mechanic, but enjoy getting my hands dirty, and used to service my own fords, years ago, when I couldnt afford to pay for servicing.

Mabye I'm headed down the wrong road.. Mabye its false economy buying so old.. Mabye there are lots of problems with the non-galvanised early models, I dont know - It seems to be all I can afford to do at present.. Once I go newer than 30 years, the VRT will probably jump up the cost out of my reach.

I *think* a 1974 911SC would not depreciate too much (more) over 2 or 3 years ?

Advise please ?

Hi Declan,

A 1974/75 911 will be a 2.7 L as the 911 sc started in 1978.
I had an older 911 (1968) for the reasons you outlined such as no VRT and Tax however it was LHD so I sold it. LHD is fine if you live in Dublin but if you drive a lot of country roads I would not reccomend it (Just my opinion).
I replaced mine with an early eighties RHD 911 and although the car tax is nearly 1300 euros per year you will have a galvanised shell and more power. As I only do about 3000 miles pa in mine I want to enjoy each mile.
If you import a RHD eighties 911 expect to pay approx 5000 to 7000 euros VRT.

I've since been steered to a '76 model due to the galvanising.. apparently the non galvanised models rust big time.

I'd love to go for an early 80's model, but the funds wont stretch that far !!
I did get a few VRT quotes and got around 3K for an 81, 4K for an '82 and 6k to 7k for an 85 .. all 3.0L targas

I do agree with your logic on the LHD... Donegal is not really known for its high class roads, to say the least.

Hi Declan, I imported a 1984 Carrera Targa last Nov it cost me Eu4500 in vrt but the car is now in beautiful condition, having spent about 6 months replacing interior etc. Tax is Eu 1300, and classic insurance is Eu 6oo fully comp for me and my wife...Tom
 
Hi All...i've been away from this forum for a while....

Decaln...sent you a mail over the weekend. Yeh, pre-77 rust..but you can look after them...I don't even hae a gararge...I use a carcoon for bad days and a normal cover for normal days.

Depending on the exact car.....but early 911's can be alot quicker than some 80's cars. So performance is not necessarily a disadvantage. Left hookers on country roads...yeh...don't fancy over taking a tractor araound gweedore.

John - Yes, indeed the '85 quote was for a 3.2L. My mistake.

For info, my quotes for vrt were:

1985 911 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet, 85k miles - Between EUR 7050 and EUR 5550
1982 911 3.0 SC, 90k miles - Between EUR 4275 and EUR3525
1981 911 3.0 SC Targa, 115k miles - Between EUR 4200 and EUR 3150
1979 911 3.0 lt Targa Celebration, 54k miles - Between EUR 5250 and EUR 4800
1977 911 2.7 Targa, 66K miles - Between EUR 4,200 and EUR 3,750
1976 911 2.7 Coupe, 102K miles - between EUR 4350 and EUR 3750

The figures are "depending on condition when examined"

God only knows how they come up with a valuation !

Hi Sean, first I tried to get insurance from Axa with whom I am already insured on a Pajreo, but they laughed at me, when pressed on the subject they quoted me Eu 3500 with me only coverad, and at that only 3rd party. So I phoned Carole Nash and delt with some very polite and helpful people who were only too ready to insure me with no negstive attitude as we tend to suffer in Ireland when dealing with Insurance Co,s...so three cheers for Carole Nash, and fingers up to the Irish Insurance Trade! regards Tom
 
Hi Tom, i'm with Hibernian via a broker in Bray. Cheapest quotes around....three of us are with them, mines 1971 the other two are 1973. Well worth a call when you are renewing.

For info, I got insurance quote from axa for 255 Euro (Limited to 3.5k miles), but had to have another insured car in my name.

Also Brophy & Co. in Portlaoise quoted 385 for 3rd party f&t, or 410 for comp, limited to 5200 miles, or open driving: 495 for 3rd party f&t, or 530 for comp, limited to 5200

Declan, try Nortons Insurance in Bray.....they are a broker for Hibernian, they were €100 cheaper than AXA.

You'll find the number on the web.
 
Just read through these various posts and see that they've wandered away from the original topic....it happens all the time!
I know nothing of the tax rules in Eire, but there is one model missing from the equation, the 1976/77 Porsche Carrera 3 - they're getting scarce, but a good one will be well worth the premium you have to pay over a 2.7 or (later) SC.

the figure is supposed to be 30% of what the customs deem the market value.
Recently a friend paid 5000 E for an excellent 3.2 cabrio but I also know of someone who paid 4,500 for a 1980 SC Targa LHD.

I pay 402 E, fully comp 4,000mile limit with AXA via F.I.R.M/Rooney Gallagher, Carole Nash were looking for 780 E. I have found Carole Nash difficult to deal with and certainly their rates have increased substantially in the recent past for classic motorcycles as they get a greater market share.

How did you go about getting the VRT quotes? Is there a form of some sort to fill in and send off to the tax office or something to this effect? Also, how long does it usually take to get a response? Through a rather rapid turn of events me and my 944S2 may be heading Ireland way rather soon, so this is suddenly a big issue for me.

Haven't had the car for the required 6 months for the exemption unfortunately. Is only going to come up about a month short but from what I understand the tax guys are absolute demons for making sure that you don't sneak through the cracks.

I did it all by email to the vrt office in Tallaght.
I dont have the email address to hand right now, but will post it later on this evening

It took them about a day to come back with a figure, which they had to get from "head office in Rosslare", so you might be quicker to phone the VRO in Rosslare if you can get hold of a phone number.

Finally got around to digging out the info needed.

They did quote the first two cars without problems, but when I kept asking for more models, they asked me to send this info on the vehicles in question.

Hi Declan,

We were up in Letterkenny a few weeks back en route to the Grainán, stopped in your local Dunnes and had lunch at the Macs there, we toured all over Donegal in our old camper, a great time was had by all. There are a few pics on our website here.

Have brought a number of cars back to Eire for the brother who is in Dublin (we are from Limerick) and the VRT quotes issued in advance have always been the same when we showed them the car. Make sure it's absolutely filthy when you get it there, unscrew a few bits etc, leave some wires hanging out of the dash and all that and you might even get some money off! Also make sure you tell the guy 'it will cost me a fortune to fix it up but I've always wanted one of these cars' lol. [8D]

Can't imagine that you will buy a tidy early car for much less than the cost of an SC (the best 911 for first-timers IMO), but there is a very nice green RHD 2.7 Carrera on eBay at the minute which has been for sale for some time, don't know if the guy will take a sensible offer - looks pretty good to me. €3K VRT on an SC Targa sounds like a bit of a bargain, again only my opinion.

Personally the LHD doesn't bother me, the camper is LHD, was no problem on your roads up there and is 8ft wide. I had my own LHD 911 SC back in Limerick for a funeral a few months ago and that was fine too. But it's up to you obviously. If you have an SC then you won't spend too much time on the wrong side of the road overtaking people - they are incredibly quick in second and third and those Gweedore tractors will be dispensed with in double quick time.

You could do worse than keeping an eye on ebay uk, if you do see something over here you like I might be able to look at it for you if it's not too far away.

I recognize that Lindy !! - You must have passed through Crolly recently ?

I have considered going the SC route, but cost is the issue. As it's a 3rd car, I can't come up with a plausible excuse for paying another 1100 euro in road tax, and if its newer than '79 then the insurance is another 1000. Thats 2100 euro, compared to around 450 for tax & ins on a pre'75, and thats every year :((.

I've tried doing my sums in all sorts of ways, but it just does not compute any better !

Another factor would be how easy it will be to sell again, after having imported and paid a few grand in VRT. I dont think theres much demand in Ireland, so I'd hate to lose out on the VRT amount by having to sell back into the UK !

I've had a win with mine. From discussions with the VRT office appears that as moving to Ireland wasn't expected at the time I bought the car then I will be exempt despite not making the required 6 months (although the VRT was estimated at between €1,425 and €2,100, which was less than I expected anyway). Looks like the Porsche is coming with me!
