As you all know I drive a Ford Focus TDDi as my daily hack. Its grand but when I got it my wifes, friends son said he would buy it off me whatever time I was ready.. He was 14 at the time and I thought it was just owl chat...Well now he is 17 and can get insurance so he has his heart set on it....... He has the cash waiting...

I on the other hand last night seen a Cobalt Blue '90 S2 for sale about Lancashire "In need of tidy" . There was no pictures of the car as it was in Classic Car Weekly. I absolutely love Cobalt Blue as a colour. I am going to ring up today and enquire... Thats going to be the first sin commited

FOR
  • I dont do big miles anymore
  • Plenty of room in a 944 for what I need
  • The young fella has the cash - I would not like to disappoint him
  • Our street is quiet and relatively scumbag free
  • My insurance is at an accepable level
  • Its Cobalt Blue
AGAINST
  • I would spend too much time tinkering - Will cause problems with her indoors
  • I am not for getting rid of the Turbo - see above
  • I would drive it "just for the hell of it"
  • This S2 might not be in great condition
  • The tax is €1545 per year where the Focus is €277
  • The VRT is at least €1500
Sorry for the length of the post lads but my head is totally wrecked. Any advice..........?

Feel the lure of the S2 ... you won't give in. And when you are ready to sell your turbo, I am sure you can do so for free on here ... [:D]

On a more serious note, I run an S2 as a daily driver and only car. Mr Smith has a turbo for himself and an S2 for the wife. Sounds like you are possibly planning the same. It seems to work for him.

It sounds like the S2 will be a more expensive choice than the Focus, in terms of running costs. And there's a question only you can answer - is it worth the extra cash? I happen to think there is nothing more miserable than a car that keeps you poor, but this may not be your situation.

I'd suggest going to have a look at the S2 and seeing what nick it is in. Snag is it is not an easy journey for you.

Sounds to me you have already convinced yourself [;)] My only worries would be the overheads, insurance and tax, but that's always been a problem in your part of the world.

This phrase would worry me!
There are lots of S2s for sale so it would need to be cheap!
The preparation could cost more than the car - although that might be part of the appeal (the prep not the cost!)
Not an easy trip to view but I suppose its your only option.
It is a great colour!

But then I said that to myself for two years and bought a 944 anyway. I was sick of the internal debate by then.

Worst comes to worst you can always sell it again and buy another mile muncher.
 
A couple of years back i agonised over my car choice for months. I'd draw up for & against for loads of car options .Like you I needed a practical cheap runaround for work but wanted the S2 for weekends evenings and sunny day cruises.
I even considered getting one car to satisfy both requirements like a turbo diesel A4 Avant .

In the end I got a diesel mondy for work and another S2 . although the S2 gets used rarely the smile it puts on my face and the sheer pleasure it gives me as i slip into the sports seats and close the door transends all the daily crap the world throws at me .

Just buy it [;)]

 
Thanks lads for your advice...! My head is sorted out but I still "Feel the Lure" Oli [:D]

I couldnt get the lad with the S2 on the fone so I text him and said I was interested and what was involved in the tidy. He said there were a few small dings and a few rust spots but didnt go into detail. He kept saying it was a great runner but didnt mention anything like service history. I didnt get the warm glowey feeling so I think its better to let it slide.

Its always about this time of year I get notions like this. The turbo is inside for another month and I am getting impatient, I think that is the problem - Once I get her out again I will be happy. My intention is to drive her for the full 6 months this year. Its not good to have her hibernating.

As for the Focus - If the young fella takes it, its going to take me a good while to get another runabout .. Nevermind... I'll just have to drive the 944 as everyday transport.. (Thats what I am going to tell the missus anyway [;)])
