I'm not sure whether this is news or old news, but I had a chance to chat with the Michelin man yesterday at the Wilton House Supercar Day and despite the fact that a 991 was featured on their stand, the Cup Super Sport will not be Porsche approved for our cars. Apparently development for Porsche approval has been stopped for the 20" 991 rim and the car featured had Alpin winter tyres on, which have been approved. The Super Sport is now available for Panamera Gen11 and the Carrera GT, which got a very good write up in this month's Evo group test.

This seems odd to me as they are cutting out a section of the current and future replacement market for a good few years, especially with the 3 year warranty now in place, as it is unlikely that owners will fit a non N rated tyre as it will invalidate the warranty.
 
It is Porsche that is dragging heels as Michelin clearly want to sell tyres.

There appear to be some technical issues Porsche are not fully satisfied with, although the technician would not elaborate.

As far as 997 sizes are concerned, there seems little hope of an N rating anytime soon. [&:]

That was the point, Clive. Porsche were not happy with certain technical aspects of the tyre and Michelin took the decision not to continue development to address the issues. That's how I understood it anyway.
 
I'm still VERY happy with my Super Sports on my 997 [:D]

Sometimes I am very grateful that I waved my warranty goodbye. I may regret that one day if my engine blows up though of course, but by then I would have saved that amount in not paying for extended warranties anyway...

Which is one of the reasons it is so annoying that they won't be available until the warranty period expires, or any extended one. It appears that it must have been relatively minor issues, particularly as they were being used on some of the cars at the Silverstone centre IIRC.
 

I also found out that the new cup 2 that will be standard on the new GT3 in 20" are not going to be N rated as 19" and I will have to have the current cup's if I stay with Michelin. I am told the new tyres are a big step forward particularly as far as wear and wet weather performance are concerned so I don't understand why they cannot be N rated apparently because the 997 is now obsolete and Porsche will not spend any money on an old model. A bit short sighted in my opinion.

So if the big four, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin and Continental all stopped making N rated tyres, because it wasn't economically viable to do so, what would Porsche do then, I wonder? If the speed and load ratings for any given tyre are the same as the N rated one I still fail to understand why they say they can't go on the car. What else could be different? There must be thousands and thousands of Porsches driving around with non N rated tyres and, to my knowledge, they are not having tyre failures every five minutes!
 
Road noise, rolling resistance etc etc. All tyres are a compromise in some aspect or another. Porsche probably wanted to move the tyre in a direction without compromising in another.

Yet they have N rated the new tyre for the Carrera GT which hasn't been made for years...
 
Don't think so Geoff. The fronts on the CGT are 265 19" and the rear 335 20". GT3 are 245 and 305.
