MFI injectors

All the symptoms suggest that the injectors aren’t working as Bosch intended. Looking for recommendations to clean and test the injectors on Bosch MFI mechanical fuel injection.

The two people with the correct Bosch equipment to test MFI pumps and injectors are:
Fred Pentecost ( Former proprietor of Tower) 014728 27632
And
Neil Bainbridge (BS Motorsport) 012966 58422

Can you describle in more detail the symptoms you are experiencing? These early MFI injectors are (by modern standards) very simple devices (no solenoid control, no extremely high pressure fuel distribution), therefore not much can go wrong with them that can't be easily diagnosed on the car with the injectors and pump still installed.

Hi there

To Mike’s point, I once had my pump removed and sent for rebuild by a very well respected specialist, only for the fault to be later traced to an intermittent block in the fuel line! To their credit they immediately waived the cost, but do try to eliminate other potential causes first.

Good luck
John

Hello Nick,
NBR are not able to clean MFI injectors they say they just replace them with new ones!
I had my injectors cleaned when the MFI pump was reconditioned by Tower Bridge Diesels some time ago, as above for the contact, I am not sure if they still are in business, anyone know?.

Your short description suggests a shortage in fuel supply to the cylinders. Are you sure that the injectors are the problem?
Is the car regularly driven? When was the fuel filter replaced, did that disturb anything in the pipes between the injectors and the filter? Is the fuel pump supplying enough fuel? Do you still have the old braided fuel pipes? They will be dissolved by the new fuels and may be the source of bits blocking the injectors after the filter
The injectors cannot be dismantled unlike later fuel injection types and are generally very reliable

Keep us informed of your results, Robin.

They can be cleaned in an Ultrasonic cleaner to be on the safe side & you could then fit new sealing O rings (orange colour) when refitted.
It is also feasible to check their output removing 1 at a time ,cranking the engine with injector over a jamjar-remove plugs & king lead- for say 10 secs-you can then check against the correct spec, for effectiveness.-Just be carefull.
