Maybe diff noise ?

Another day and here we go, a couple of tight right handers full pelt 2 nd gear, lots of noise from the rear axel area, I drive with the roof down. It sounded like a wind up noise, changed into 3rd and let off, noise disappeared. The gearbox oil & filter was changed 1 year ago 6k down the line. What do you think?
I‘ve not got to the fact I’ve not had music for 7 months due to no code and a battery change. The kids do enjoy a good guessing game though!
 
Very difficult tosay, but if it only does it in second gear then I would suspect the gearbox rather than differential. Was it a one-off episode, or does it do it consistently?
 
Hello Richard, it only done it the once as I drove home slower. I’ll change the diff oil and try it out. There was a newer rumble that I can’t be sure was there before as I’ve found out how to put rear windows up with the roof down and all things are slightly different. The gearbox oil and filter was changed last May. You mention 2nd gear only is this the potential issue?

I was only suggesting that if the noise only occurs when in 2nd gear, and if it donsistently does it, then the problem is likely to be the gearbox rather than the differential. Diff whine would occur in all gears. I assumed that is what you mean by "wind up noise". Always difficult to describe noises in words.

The 996 gearbox is pretty robust, and the only occasional issue I hear of is mainshaft bearing noise. That doesn't sound like your issue though.

I’d agree with Richard’s comments, and diff and gearbox noises really require expert diagnosis. Just a thought but you may also want to consider a rear wheel bearing problem if the noise appears predominantly when you’re cornering?
