M637 Option Car Anyone

Edited. Paul: we need better smilies.

Jonny, I wonder if theyre different, or whether I simply presumed that mine were plastic because they 'matched' the tops? I have seen one set on eBay in years and years of occasional searching. They were from an early shiny dash 924 and everything that I was watching sold for £5s, £10s & £20s (including a perfect shiny dash). I missed these when my girlfriend tripped over my router shortly before the auctions ended..... [:D]

Yes they do match well. The rough aluminium finish appears to be anodised black.

After a few years of searching I found the nearside mirror on Germany eBay for around €30. Having won the auction, I then received several emails from other parts of Europe asking if I would sell them on...

For the driver's side I took take a deep breath, saved my pocket money and ordered from Exeter OPC. Incidentally, the new part did not come with the adjustment wires. It has never bothered me as I can easily reach it with the window open.

I believe the very early 924 came with a different design of manual mirror. Much flatter in profile - Perhaps similar to a very early MK1 golf or late beetle?

Do you have some info on cars that were specially commisioned for road use Simon?

ORIGINAL: 944 man

Unfortunately not, only rumour.

I guess if you're willing to pay and you know the right people to ask...

Freisinger were selling what looked to be a special-order 924 GTS Clubsport not so long ago. Leather sport seats center-trimmed in that lovely tartan, combined with fibreglass doors!

I believe that they were 1979 model year onwards parts, with VW and Porsche. My car was a 1980 registered chassis number car and quite rare as a base spec model (clear glass, no rear wiper, manual windows, manual mirrors, no sunroof, rubber gear lever gaiter).

As an aside, this was the sweetest handling car that Ive owned, and Id had a Turbo S and a 968 CS when I bought this. Ultimate roadholding was batter on the M758 and the CS, but neither drove as well as the 924.

If only I had £100,000 to give to Herr Freisinger... 937 Club Sports are easy to research in comparison to 944 models. I hear that he has several sets of aluminium doors and bonnets for those hwo have the funds.

Re-reading my earlier post I see that Ive written 'would be' where I actually meant 'could be'. I havent edited it because Ive been quoted, but I wanted to correct myself.

Turbo Cup cars were described by the factory as M754, and this code can be found on the SCCA Escort and Canadian Rothmans cars, while neither mention M637.

In theory a customer could walk in to an American Porsche dealers and order a road-going 944 Turbo or 944S with M637 and when it arrived, drive it away. Whether this actually happened is debatable though, as it has been suggested that production option M637 was PMNA/PCNAs cunning way to make an M754 special, into a car eligible for the production Escort series.
