Low mileage no spec vs high mileage and spec

Hi,

I am new to this forum and would like your opinions on 2 cars that i'm looking at :

1.51 (02)Silver 2.7 886 with half alacantra vinyl interior done 44k,3owners not been serviced for 5yrs and only done 5k in the last 5yrs,has virtually no options apart from a tracker i.e. Bose,full leather heated seats etc

2. 2002 Blue Facelift model 3 owners full leather interior,69k on the clock,Glass rear screen,full porsche and specialist service history

My question is really which one would you go for the low mileage stock car with nothing on it which was only driven in summer has the old lights,wheels interior etc so these would be things i'd want change(clear light package min £1,200) or a car with higher mileage but has a marginally better spec (i.e facelight leathers,rear screen) both cars are roughly the same age


Your opinions would be appreciated,thanks in advance
 
Option 2 definitely - 69K is not high mileage for a Boxster.

Good Boxtsers go very quickly so a pre-inspection, although preferred, may not be possible.
 
This is a realy easy question. You clearly arn't thrilled with either, so look for a Boxter you like.
 
Hi, from the experiences of many on the forum i have witnessed, it seems that having a car serviced regularly (even by OPC) is no guarantee against the dreaded RMS / IMS - the most common issue and seems not to descriminate between serviced not serviced cars. The Boxster servicing requirements are very low IMO - only an oil change once every two years, and spark plugs @40k miles / air filter etc. There is nothing unique required - such as cambelts (etc Ferrarri). The only thing needed every two years is brake fluid change - but that is almost very type of car. Brake pads, etc depend upon use. Oil changes are extended because it uses 10litres - double the usual oil fill ! Personaly I would take the lower mileage - (assuming it has been past its teething) because nothing is better than an original "fresh" car - suspension, interior etc,and then spend the difference on extras to modifiy it the way you want it.

low mileage every time but make sure you get it examined at a OPC or specialist before parting with your cash

trouble is this isn't your only dilemma as you are considering two different cars and have not said their prices.
does the pre-facelift with clear lights and new roof/glass screen still come in under the price of the newer one ..etc?

 
I'd be going with the second option, out of those cars. Its got the white lights, leather etc and the facelift, plus service history. OK its got more miles so there may be a tad more wear n tear but hopefully some of that is already addressed in the service file. Why spend silly money on clear lights on a less attractive car ?

There are hundreds of Boxsters for sale - when you come to sell, buyers will want the facelift, half leather as a minimum ( don't want alcantara), air con. You will have to sell a basic spec car for a lot less than a slightly higher mileage nicely spec'd car.

I think it’s very much a personal decision based on risk perceptions and also gut feel when looking at both cars; and one that I was also faced recently buying my first Porsche.
I went for a newer higher mileage with better spec car rather than an older model with lower miles.
I won’t say it has been a money free choice but after a major service (not required but a choice) and a few wear and tear repairs, she runs like a dream and as a back up, I’ve majored in the warranty cover for the first year.

Aside slightly more crushing of the seat foam I never consider high mileage as an issue. If anything it can be an advantage as it means the car has covered distances. Low mileage can mean short trips where the engine doesn't have time to warm up and can do more damage than a good long run. Also, on an older car, many items are age, not mileage, related so will need replacing at a date no mater how many miles have been covered.

If you have a good file of documents that confirms X was replaced on what ever date, at least you aren't left guessing. If something needs replacing after 10 years, and you don't have and invoice conforming it was replaced under 10 years ago then you pretty much have to get it done straight away for any piece of mind.

Both options are 21/22 years old - go for the one thats been looked after and serviced correctly
