lost all gauge activity

Assuming oval dash , they have 3 push on electrical connectors, secured with small levers each end. These are sometimes broken allowing the connector to disconnect.
You may be able to get at them in duty from underneath, but probably best to remove the cluster.

fuse 18 was to be blame for the dash, however sunroof now not working, the fuse for that number 1, is fine though, so any other ideas.
Try the micro-switch between the sun visors. It was my problem on my last sunroof issue.

Have you tried removing the fuse that you mended, checking all other fuses and then seeing whether the sunroof works? Did the sunroof work before for certain? What youd be trying to establish is whether you have an electrical problem caused by a short circuit / backfeeding.
I struggling to get at the moment, as my car has a massive bottom end problem... Ive sorted out an engine but Im not sure where Im going to get the work done - probably at an MX-5 specialist near to Doncaster.
