Lock Barrel Question

Hi Gents
Back on the road once again with my beloved 944.... And loving it...! Now that I have done a few major jobs I am starting to tackle the smaller niggly stuff.....!

Background
I never had a key for the passenger side door or tailgate.. I only ever had one key and this is for the drivers door and ignition. A good friend of mine is a very good locksmith and when I lost my keys due to a fire he made up a key from the door lock barrel... I asked him about the passenger door and tailgate and he said that he could make keys up again but the lock barrels will have to be removed - Also he said he might be able to reset them to the same profile as my ignition key... He said he can get the wafers but it may take a few days...

Question
I have 2 scrapper 924's at my home place.... Could I take the barrels from one of them (1 is 81 the other is 83) and let him reset the wafers in them then fit them to the 944....? I did notice that the part nos were different ! Is there much of a physical difference....? It would be handy to just get the barrels reset and fit them rather than have the car parked up again and will save me a stripping match ...!

It should be possible to have one key fit all the locks.
 
924 and later 944's have different lock barrels. But it is not hard to remove the basrrels and rekey them to suit the key you have. then you get the one key fits all senario. If your pal is a locksmith he will do it really easily. I did it on mine and it was a bit fiddly but not especially hard.
 
As the others say, should be easy for a locksmith with spares from the925 .
My 83 had 3 keys. I bought a pair of handles as one of mine wad damaged, and had enough bits to make 1 full set and altered the "new' key to match my car as a bonus!
 
Thanks for that lads - It looks like I will just have to take out the 944 barrels and get Conaill to get them reset ! He can get the bits to do the job as he is a big VW fan and a very enthusiastic locksmith as well !

Also lads a word to the wise.. I got a blank Porsche crested key off eBay and got Conaill to cut it. Turned out the key would work in the door but not the ignition.. Problem was the key blade was too short.. Buyer beware [:(]
 
Buy lock barrel blades for a golf Mk1 from e-bay or a VW stealer and with a bit of fiddling youll make all lock barrels fit one key

The locks/barrels are early Golf types (as are the handles)
