Lights won't retract

Morning all,

The last 3 time's I've turned my lights off, the body of the light has refused to retract. After some wobbling (the lights not me!), I've managed to get them back in place, but I'm never realy sure what I've done to fix it.

Any suggestions as to what the problem / fix might be?

Thanks

Chris

Morning Chris

Yes I had this problem on one of my lights. Do both your lights stay up, or is it just one?

If it is just one, I would suggest you get someone with very thin arms and a can of WD40 to liberally lubricate the raising mechanism located below the light.

If it is both, I would guess that it is more serious than a bit of friction!

If memory serves me right, the lights retract using only gravity once the power is off, so lubrication should do it. There is a black knob beside the lights which you either pull or turn (forgot ... check your handbook) and this allows the lamp body to flop forward to change the bulb. It also allows you access to lubricate the pivot.

For fear of stating the obvious! to make sure the headlamps retract, you have to turn the lights off first before you switch off the ignition. If i do it the other way round my headlamps also stay up. Just a thought as you're not quite used to it yet.

Thanks once again for the help guys.

I'm prety sure that I was switching off the lights before the ignition, but I'll make sure I do in future, and I'll let you know if it still happens.

Will, it's both lights, so hopefully they're both in need of some oil, but if it's not the mechanism sticking what else could cause this? A relay?

In the mean time, I'll (pull or twist) the handles, and make sure everything's lubed up.

Chris

IIRC, the procedure is, headlamps on, pull and twist the levers in the engine compartment, pull the headlamps forward, switch off headlamps and the mechanism drops. Then you can see inside and have a fiddle.

just to add a point which may not be directly related to your problem, but i have found it helpful for my h/light pop up problems.

the relay that powers the lights is the large/double one in the fuse box. it is always worth pulling this out and cleaning up all the terminals with something like emery cloth. shove it back in, turn the ignition on and see what happens when putting the lights on/off, if no joy give it a good wiggle as a last ditch effort !!
