Hi

I am finding dipped headlights a nightmare as the vision is very poor

Can anybody advise me on upgrading the light bulbs.

I have seen alot advertised but I am concerned that getting some of these high powered ones will drain the battery or use to much power.

I use the car everyday mostly in the light if that helps.

Any remarks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You can use uprated bulbs in 911s Nathan but fit a relay for the headlights this prevents the wiring getting red and hot and also protects your switch gear. You can get a kit for a few dollars here

Email Marcus and ask perhaps, a more suitable conversion for your car is one of the more expensive kits available from places like Porscheshop, I think they contain the relays necessary, give them a ring.

I used some of the Halfords Upgrade bulbs. Can't remember their exact description, but there's a chart kept near the bulbs section that tells you which ones fit your car. (mine's a '97 993 too) Anyway. they don't need any extra relays or anything, and do give a noticeable, if not spectacular increase in light! Think they were about £12 per bulb.

The previuos owner of my car put some uprated bulbs in which I am still using and have had no need for any extra or uprated relays etc.....

I think they could be those OSRAM white or blues things ??? ..... but they are about as good as you can get before going down the full ugrade road wth Xeons and ballasts etc.....

A bit more to buy than just the bulbs, but there is now a lower cost HID kit available (still £329!). I understand this offers the best solution to lighting upgrades:

Even if you don't buy from them, it's probably worth giving Colin Belton at 9m a call.

I believe Phil Raby fitted something sililar to his 964 as was featured in 911 & Porsche World last year and raved about the improvement.

A couple of useful sources for lamp upgrades -autolamps and powerbulbs
As for HID lamps, to be road legal in UK you must also have headlight cleaning and automatic self-levelling. That is not the case in USA.
Also if you are tempted with 'rally' bulbs at 80 - 100W, then 55W is the road legal limit. You can use them off-road though!

And then you melt the plastic bulb socket in hi beam, and probably the wiring .....

Very true. There have been examples of cars catching fire due to continued use of high wattage lamps, as the wiring loom overheats.

A word of warning and echoing the thoughts above regarding uprateded lighting. On the older cars the system is literally at breaking point already so it is best to proceed with caution when swapping bulbs around. There have been a few cases of uprated bulbs burning out switches and wires due to resistance in the wires and the rapid build up of heat. IMHO drivers of older 911s would be well advised to carry a well specified fire extinguisher as the wiring in your cars is getting older and becoming more and more brittle especially the engine loom. If you are fitting uprated headlight bulbs to an earlier 911 consider fitting a relay to protect the system from overload.

Thanks for the info Clyde. the only ones I could find in the drivers manual were headlight bulbs. I will check again.

The reason i asked is that a previous owner has replaced all the bulbs with LED's which have a habit of falling out of the bulb holders.

To facilitate fitting LED bulbs, the previous owner has 'modified' the bulb holders.

Does anyone know where I can obtain new bulb holders from? especially those for the rear lights.

I'm unable to locate them in the parts manual, but have not tried asking at the dealership yet
