'Leccy Tyre Pump

Chaps,

Cutting a long story short, my electric air pump has never been very convincing. It has worked, but badly; it would shudder and grumble and run very slowly, occasionally stalling. I have once had to use it in anger, and it didn't fill me with confidence.

I used it this morning to top up the tyres before the annual long-distance Christmas drive (local garage now charges 20p to use their tyre machine! []) and it was as bad as ever. Worse, if anything. And ended up packing up on me.

Close examination revealed that the plug (that goes into the cigarette lighter) had melted. Yes, melted. Failed to the point that no connection was possible. Unimpressed, I removed the plug and soldered on a more modern affair ...

... and the difference is dramatic! The pump now runs MUCH faster and inspires confidence! A decent solution, rather than the pathetic after-thought I originally had it down as.

Here's a picture ...

... and a suggestion that, if you have a standard pump which is somewhat lacklustre in performance, the problem could be the plug!

(I'll avoid the obvious point that changing the plug made my turbo-esque air compressor into the S2 of the tyre inflation world because it's Christmas, and I don't want to upset the 951 owners on here ... [;)])

Theyre rare; Id be surprised if more than a small minority of people have an original spare wheel compressor...

I hope you weren't trying to fill yourself-I thought the pump was for the tyres![:)][:)]

And only a small number probably work! Well done Oli on this restoration project!

I have a couple stashed away in the garage. There are still quite a few around. The plug does seem to be the weak point.

Why, thank you Mr Simkin! Such a good way of looking at it!

Everyone who has one - go and change the plugs on them! (Seriously ... bear in mind that if you need to use it in anger by the side of the road, to inflate the flat spare tyre, you'll be less than happy if the plug melts when you do so!)

Are you sure the wire inside did not touch together inside, found that mine were a bit on the close side.

My God! You have just ruined it's originality []

Just think how many concours points you will lose and all for the sake of putting air in your tyres [:D]

Thanks for the advice I'll do mine after Christmas as it wheezes just the same

Good point, but no; the spring bobble on the tip of the plug had melted into the plastic.

Originality? It's important, but less important to me than practicality!
