Knockhill track day 24th June

Great to see such a good turn-out at Knockhill, particularly from the R2 members. Although the weather was unseasonably cold and windy, the track stayed dry, and as the day wore on and rubber was laid down, the grip levels improved from the "green" surface earlier in the day.

I was very satisfied with the handling performance of the revised geo settings on my 718. Knockhill is a track I know extremely well from my SLS experience with my Cayman R and every lap I did with the 718 underlines what a fabulously capable track day car it is.....even with P Zeros. The grip, handling poise, braking, and torquey acceleration out of the corners was hugely impressive. The PDK in Sport Plus mode also worked a treat, and I never thought I would enjoy driving an auto-shift on the track so much. It's fabulous.

In 2015 I gave a talk to R2 members at the Lairhillock club night on motorsport and track day driving. The purpose was to try and persuade R2 members to give track day driving a go and improve driving skills with expert tuition. It was very gratifying to see so many R2 members present at Knockhill, and particularly those who decide to participate in their own cars.

Brian,

It was a pleasure to be driven on track by you in that marvelous Cayman of yours! The strong braking, even on regular steel brakes was quite something, as was the balance of the chassis through undulating direction changes! What a machine, and being out with somebody who can extract the most from it was quite some experience.

I'd love to drive on track myself someday, however first I need some hours of tuition. If I had done the day in my own car I would have been dangerously slow, and probably have made some dangerous moves getting in the way of people travelling far quicker.

Now I'm no longer a student perhaps soon I'll be able to pay for some proper tuition! :D

George,

Thank you for your kind comments. I really enjoyed driving my 718 Cayman at Knockhill. The harder I pushed it, the better it got.

I'm sure your time will come for having a go at track driving, and pleased to hear you have tuition in mind. Tuition is a vital component in becoming a competent and safe track day driver. I am 70 years old and been track driving for more than 50 years, and I had further tuition from Rory Butcher at Knockhill only last month. Never too old to learn!

Good luck with your engineering career.

One more photo of my 718 at Knockhill. It is so confidence inspiring, I felt at one with the car. Especially when without a passenger and in "motorsport mode".
