Just cuts out when driving

Can any body help me with with my 1982 944 problem, all of a sudden from being ultra reliable it just cuts out for no reason at all when Im driving along at various speeds. If I pull over, wait 2 seconds crank it over she re starts again. it also appears to be happening more frequent and in dangerous places. Struggling to find a pattern although I can smell a small oil smell when my heater is on, car doesnt leak oil and hardly uses any, just thought I would throw that one in. Any help would be appreciated

Does she cut out round about the same length of time from cold startup, and continues to cut out later ? Sounds more like an electrical fault/break. Have known fractured HT leads cause similar on other cars in the past, although the cutting out was almost predictable in that instance at the same point during warm-up, and would take longer before you could re-start.

Sudden cut-out, or does she start hunting ? Engine running too rich (stink of fuel from exhaust), or possibly even too lean......

Last thought, could be fuel starvation - when was the fuel filter last changed, and do you have decent pressure to the fuel rail ?

nb. sorry I've not been on the forum for a while chaps, new baby + sick wife + sheared timing belt tensioner = 944 sitting on drive for a long time [&o]
 
If it just dies like you've cut the ignition my money would be on the speed / reference sensor playing up.
 
I always thought that the speed / reference sensor stopped the enine from starting, but wouldnt stop it when its already running.

I would like to put my money on the DME relay.

 
A hard fault on the speed / reference sensor will stop the engine from starting, but an intermittent fault will cause the engine to stop when running. On my S2 it started off as cutting out perhaps once a month and over time developed into would only start "once in a blue moon" and then would cut out after a few minutes running.

Baby is doing great, wife not so great unfortunately (and won't be so for long time), so car is bottom of the list.... [&o] Might be a bit easier as the evenings get lighter, as the car won't fit in the garage so I'm doing everything on the driveway. Spent pretty near a whole day the other week just getting the exhaust manifold re-fitted as one stud on the replacement head was fractionally out of line, and I could only undo half the mainfold from the exhaust as don't have the tools to get the the higher up joint. Still can't get the gasket back in between the manifold and the exhaust, as only a gnats whisker would fit in the gap after I finally fitted the manifold to the block, so will have to ask the garage to do that before MOT.....

A total shot in the dark would be the hall pickup sensor in the distributor.. ..Heat is breaking down the transistors and after it cools off for a few minutes its fine. seen this problem regularly in Astra of the same vintage....

Is the 944 vfitted with them ..? . I havent a clue... If its not fitted then disregard all of the above [:D]
 
have seen this symptom,..........eventual cause after much effort was a faulty battery.

all the computers in the world won't find it, the main agent was stumped,...... and the local lawnmower indie said...try changing the battery

can't know for certain but easy to try
