Just checking in chaps....this looks worth a punt?

NOTHING like an EMC car - they are decent shells, fully bare metal stripped, with any problems rectified then painted and only the required bits put back to the spec required.

Its a half done project which they have lost interest in, thats my guess.

They do have a 968 in red that looks a lot better, as a walk past at least!

Hi. I bought this car :) I paid £4k for it, which judging by the comments sounds like a middling-deal.
I'll inspect the car myself then see what work needs doing to it.
My aim is to track the car and some w/e b-road fun. So it doesn't have to be A1 cosmetic condition but I'm keen to get the mechanicals as good as they can be.

Hope my comments don't deter you too much[8|]
The basic car seems pretty good and solid and if its a bit tidier inside £4k would be reasonable.
There are a couple of things to check, when the cam and balancer belts were done and the cam chain and tensioners were done and I would want the rear shocks lower mounting bolts looking at (unless they already have been) as they didnot look right. The shock was free to move 10mm sideways on the bolt on both sides when I saw it.
Give me a call if you like - nos below.

Cheers.

I'm always happy to read honest opinions.

Is the cam belt or chain operated . If chain is there a need to replace if no unusual noises are heard?
The PistonHeads advertisment says the cambelt and balancer belt have been changed - but I'll check when.

The spring/damper lower bolt sounds very wrong and I'll urgently look at that. Thanks for the heads-up.

With some TLC and some luck it should become a decent enough car for my needs :)

s2 uses cambelt, balence belt, and a chain that runs the 2nd camshaft. chain tensioner guide wears so this usually needs changing otherwise serious engine failure can occur. you should change the chain as a precaution if there is no record of it being done. the main cause of lunched engines as the chain/guide gets overlooked as there was never a recommended change interval.
i actually have a chain and guide available if you need it (new)

Exhaust cam is belt driven from the front of the engine with the inlet driven by a chain from the exhaust in the middle. This chain and associated slipper / tensioner was never on the Porsche schedules and as they are now 20 ish years old they are now in need of checking at least.

As well as the above it would be worth checking any documentation to see if the head gasket is original. There has been evidence of the gasket deteriorating towards the back of the block after 20 years and allowing the coolant to bypass the final cylinder. This is fine in normal road use but if the engine gets really hot on track it can lead to seizures in cyl#4. The gasket itself will still seal the cylinders in this instance
