Jammed seat lever on my 97 C4 993

Both seat levers on the passenger seat have jammed such that I can no longer release the seat back to access the back seats from the passenger side. My garage has previously suggested, when it was starting to stick, only remedy is (expensive) seat replacement. Anybody had a similar experience and thoughts on a fix? Thanks.
