This is very interesting discussion prompted by Clive (as ever!) and one that highlights a number of issues that I have noted for some time. With so many means of communication now available it looks to have become impossible for RO’s to cover all of these bases and so Facebook -due to its ease of posting and access- has become the default for many, perhaps most. In some ways though this is an example of the threats that traditional car clubs such as this one are facing, with many Porsche websites, forums and special interest groups now operating -often with free access- via the internet. Most of these cover ground that would once have been the preserve of clubs such as ours, yet they do not ever seem to have been perceived as a threat to our Club. Likewise, the reasons for their operating outside rather than within PCGB does not ever seem to have been addressed either.
Our Forum has certainly suffered from a lack of development, perhaps consciously as various Boards have long seen it as a threat rather than an opportunity. As with most things which are not improved gradually, the leap that it would now have to make to bring it up to date is considerable and it certainly appears to be in a position where it is not meeting the needs of the majority members. Given the ambivalent attitudes towards it from management and potential users and with the recent departure of someone who has driven it along since its foundation it seems likely that it will remain very much a secondary means of communication and interest for the majority. However, its position is something of a warning as to how long-established things can easily be supplanted by newer takes on the same game.
