Hi All,

I just thought i'd introduce myself. I just this weekend purchased my first Porsche it's a 1986 944 Lux with Turbo bumpers and later (much later) Wheels.

The car itself comes with a stack of Invoices as long as your arm. The Mileometer reads 221k but i'm told that at soem point the cars had a replacement engine. On the same note there is an Invoice for the removal of the head and belt etc, im told that the company that undertook the work said that the replacement had the engine wear of a car that had done about 70k. Its a dream to drive my only concern is that when your driving and you back off of the throttle the gearbox makes some noise...Is that normal? I was told that on the last service the gearbox oil was changed.

Some gearbox noise is often considered to be normal, but it depends just how loud it is? Did you test any other 944s before buying this one and how did they compare? The good news is that even the noisiest of boxes still have many many years of life left in them before eventualy succumb to a rebuild. One thing to double check - Has the boot carpet still got its really thick layer of soundproofing foam attached underneath? Its surprising how noisy they get if this has dropped off/ been lost Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum [:)]

Replace the gearbox oil with Swepco and that should help quieten it a little. You might want to check it isn't your wheel bearings as they can hum a bit too.

I didn't test any others unfortunately my Budget was a little low (under 2k) and im not a test pilot as i had that issue trying to sell my car and it's bleedin annoying. I'll have a look at the sound proofing in the boot thanks for that. I must admit my last "sporty" car was an 87 RX7 non turbo and i'm definitely swinging more towards this car. It just feels better built, more torquey and a lot more comfortable!! My only issue is the union jack that someone has put on the sunroof.

Eek! They look pretty stupid on a mini, let alone a Porsche...[:'(] Car looks good though, the front has been done properly from the pics as it's not a simple job (see other thread on the same thing, the list of parts to change is long). As has been said, the gearbox is noisy on these, particularly on over-run. Get to one of the events and let someone have a listen, and listen to theirs, and see if it's really any worse than standard. [:)]

I agree completely i just need to find a new sunroof as i've taken some stick for it today [8|] I have a receipt for the conversion and i was very surprised by the amount of things that were changed it was about 3 pages long and ran over 2k. I definitely want to bring it along to a meet so i can some other peoples impressions on it. Oh found the last picture of it.

I'm sure a red (pink?) sunroof from a breakers won't be very expensive - should be a very common part.

EEK! I didn't spot that on the first look. I would imagine a quick respray back to Guards Red is going to cost somewere between £150-£300 depending where you go and where you live, or you might find a S/H one at a breakers for less. Either way the colour match will most likely be off unless you had the rest of the roof done too [&o]

I recognise that car- I sold it nearly 2 years ago - it then did the Scumball rally not finishing Nurenburgring with loss of oil rms seal i believe. The u.Jack was put on for that. Gearbox had Swepko in my ownership- only made a slight improvement. Good to see still going strong. Cheers Ron

hi mate, yeah mine makes a tiny bit of noise but never got an worse, seen the car on ph for 1550 wat did you manage to get it for? thanks Tom

Ah Mr Smith, I've just been looking at Invoices and receipts with your name on sir. Do you know if she was ever in a smash by any chance as there's a quote here for almost 3k's worth of bodywork back in 06. It's nice to informally meet a former keeper.[;)] Tom i got her for the asking price as to be honest i would have felt like a complete mug to haggle over that much.

Sorry Skooby- dont know your name- Yes previous owner said something about it-only cosmetic but with price of porsche parts easy to get to K3.you seem to have all other history- I sold it to a PCGB club member who was going to do the Scumball rally in it - I think it lost all its oil at the ring didnt hear anything after that. Cheers Ron Ps it would have been about march 2008 when i sold as I had Just got my S2 in feb.

Hi Ron, Sorry its Doug i use Skooby6 as it's an anagram of the number plate on my other car. [:D] Yes i got most of the history and all the MoT's dating back to '91.
