Intermittent wobble?

Your problem sounds identical to mine Mike. My issue has returned, I now suspect my front wheel that has a slightly bent lip although it seems to run staraight and balance on a balancer machine?

I'm going to get my wheels on a balancer this week and see what transpires. It is very frustrating stuff Mike I feel your pain!!

I'll try different wheels after that to prove/dispel my theory.

After wheel balance and setup (which if I'm really honest I don't think is the cause, I'd expect a different failure mode), I would look again at the rack. There was slight (and I mean slight) slop in the rack, not track rods as wheel to wheel it was good, but felt like rack to pinion. When I bought the car it had leaking power steering, and I replaced several hoses and refreshed the fluid in the system. That was then all sorted, but I always have a nagging doubt that it's the root cause due to premature rack/pinion wear. Does anyone do a rebuild kit for our steering racks ?

Glad I'm not alone, but sorry to hear someone else is suffering with the same frustrating issue Stuart.

Regards,

Mike

Hmmm, I have a steering shaft I got a few months back that I have yet to fit, does this mean I need to take it back to the OPC?

Yours does look like the mismanufacture that I'd recieved. It was all put together solid enough but puts your steering wheel 180 degrees out. I would say it can be fitted, but you'll have to remove your steering wheel to flip it round. Alternatively, send it back to OPC and tell them Bolton OPC know about the issue and have communicated it to Porsche UK (who have checked all main stock and confirmed it as wrong).

Mechanically I don't see what difference it will make, it's just the hassle of repositioning your steering wheel.

Hope that helps.

Well chaps, got the front wheels checked today, both out of balance! [&:]

Balanced up and all is well. Can't believe this is all that's been wrong, been like that for about a year since the wheels were refurbed. As a result of today's work I've got my next issue to fix, uneven tyre wear! New thread coming on!

I assume you've checked your front wheels are in balance Mike?

Its next on the list Stuart (before the week's out - using my other car anyway so no panic). Steering shaft needed doing anyway, so now it's done it's a proper balance (i'll do it myself in the mates garage, I KNOW it's right then) then a full alignment as it hasn't been done yet after all new suspension and bushes.

I'll be a happy man if that cures it [:D]

Glad to hear it's sorted yours, keep me posted of progress - I was starting to think it was a Zermatt thing [8D] haha

Will do Mike, zermatt is the fastest colour after all!

Hopefully get some negative camber dialled out tomorrow and save what's left of my front tyres!

Re refurbed wheels.
I'm going through something similar.

I've had 2 sets of wheels on my car and both were fine. Then I had the CS ones refurbed by a very well known company here in Swindon. People come for miles to here for this. Undoubtedly metal was removed as the centre caps don't fit flush now.
They made a great job wheels look great but I've had a real job getting them balanced.

Said refurb co did them 3 times to no avail. Another good indie did them and they are better but not great. Car now being serviced somewhere even better known who have suggested that traditional refurbing makes this type of wheel hard to balance as it moves its centre of gravity away from the rim where you would put weights. Adding metal is a better option?

They will try but it would be nice to have a wobble free car at motorway speeds.

Luckily for me David my wheels balanced ok on the machine. My caps still fit flush also. I think they were balanced by Stevie Wonder after the refurb, nothing more sinister. In fact IIRC they went to a tyre fitter seperate from the wheel refurber to have the rubber put back on. In fact I'm sure that Alasdair mentioned at the time that they may need re-balanced for some reason. I've no idea what was done to my wheels but they appear to have a fresh coating on them which is remarkably similar to OEM and still seem to be the same size and weight and balance-able!

Hope you get it fixed.
