Intermittent idling fault

Guys, at times my S2 wont idle smoothly,hunts between 250 rpm and 1000 rpm, can do it from cold or hot, gets better if i give the car a thrashing.

Sometimes won't idle at all.

Suspect there is an idle control valve in the set up but not sure where, clues please.

They can get gummed up very easily and do cause an erratic idle. My car has suffered at various times over the years and has had a new one twice. You can pull the hose off and squirt some carb cleaner in there which helps but if it fails you generally need to get the intake manifold off to change it (though some with very small hands can do it with the manifold in situ)
