Intermittent electric cooling fan

Hi guys

I was out for a leisurely drive yesterday, taking in some nice little villages when I encountered some traffic. As I sat there the temp needle edged up towards the red and then kept going - all the way to the top, when the temp warning light came on. All of this time the cooling fan sat dormant. Fortunately the traffic then started moving again, so I was able to get some air through the rad and get the temp back down. I also put the heaters on full blast, which helped prevent the car from over-heating, but can't say it did the same for me!

For the rest of the drive the temp was controlled by the rad and heaters combination, but there was no sign of any help from the electric cooling fan. When I got home I checked the fuses (both OK), checked that the fan connection was plugged in and that the fan could spin freely. I wasn't able to check the current across the connections just because I found the fan terminal a bit too inaccessible from above.

Later on I fired the car up again to put it in the garage, I left it idling for a while with the heaters on, but lo and behold the cooling fan whirred into life.

Any ideas as to what may be going on, how to test for this and most importantly how to remedy would be most welcome.
 
Hi Stuart, from my limited knowledge, this sounds like a radiator thermostatic switch problem to me, you'll find it on the right hand lower side of the rad if looking from the front of the car, could also be the relay found in the fuse box in the engine bay, some thermo switches have 2 wires, some have 3, just a quick peek from underneath will confirm which type you have, price is fairly cheap at around the £20 mark & you'll need a 30 mm socket to undo the switch, also make sure not to tighten too much as your screwing into plastic, this is probably the cheaper option before you change the relay, hope this helps, cheers, Jinxy
 
Id agree with Jinxy, however there are severalfan switchesand relays depending on age and if aircon is fitted.
