sorry to bring this old chestnut up again, but I'm thinking of running my 944 as my only car, so I guess won't be able to get cheap classic car insurance any more. Is there an alternative specialist insurer who would insure a 944 at a good rate as an only car, or am I stuck with the mainstream insurers such as Direct Line, Churchill etc?

Would give A Plan a ring as they seem to be brokers for all sorts of "specialist" vehicles and policies in all sorts of circumstances. No idea if they may able to come up with anything cheaper than the more mainstream providers, but might be worth a try.

Another vote for A plan, but ring the thatcham branch as that seems to where all these more specialist things are. I pay 380 for a 944T "normal policy", wife and I to drive, no claims etc if that helps.

Try direct line and norwhich union. I used NW sorry Aiva and it cost £240 for me and the wife 12,000 miles per year. I had full no claims from previous car. I think Direct line was about the same, but required Thatcham approved security devices fitting which I didn't want to do on a car that cost less than £2K

I pay around £300 with Direct Line- daily drive, 150000 miles a year, me and wife, protected NCB, guaranteed hire car. Fortunately I bought mine with a Thatcham approved system already fitted.

Phil, You dont need to dump your classic insurance. I have a classic policy with unlimited mileage and communting with Classic Line, one of only a few who will run classic insurance on an only car. My S2 is kept on the street in London, fully comp, agreed value, all for £364. Worth a call... Edd

They may not do this any more. When I bought my 944 in September I phone Classic line as this is who I ensure my 911 with. They would do it but only for £650! They said that they weren't really interested in daily runner kind anymore. Of course it could just be that the person I spoke to didn't know what they were doing.

Seems unlikely to me as my policy started on 11th Sept 09, anyway def worth a call they seem to be the most competitive for many. Edd

thanks for that everyone, plenty to go at there, and those figures sound cheaper than I thought. Cheers.

That's really annoying then as you have exactly what I wanted. I have been with Classic line for a couple of years now and found them really good to deal with. I will try again when I come up for renewel. Maybe it was clouded by already having my 911 with them.

Best I got on the 968 was with Admiral via confused.com. Came in around 400 quid, unlimited mileage, 2 named drivers, social domestic, commuting, parked on drive. Oddly just got my renewal through on the S2 and its not that much more for a road legal race car (competition car insurance) including fully comp track day cover etc. I used to think that modified cars cost a lot more to insure but I guess once you are well into your 30s and have a history with these cars it doesn't seem to make much difference.
