Indicators wont auto cancel

My auto cancel on both indicators stopped working at the weekend. I whipped the steering wheel off tonight quickly for a look but I'm none the wiser.

I can see the spring sticking out on the left and it appears to be off centre to me as lower loop sticks out more than the upper one when stalk is centred, not sure if this is right or not? See pics below for left indicating, right indicating and none.

Sometimes I can't get the right indicator to stay on whilst I'm driving, it feels like something has 'slipped' in the mechanism but I can't cure it - plus I can't see any way to take this apart or even off of the steering column (PET/Parts catalogue/Clarks no help)

I'm stumped! Any clues anyone?

8mm bolt on bottom of column secures it to column - just undo themn pull slowly and release the three connectors

may need to remove plastic surround on right but should be able to do it.

if you cant get it working i have a few here mate.
 
Mine don't autocancel either, several times I've gone back outside and seen my parking lights are on from where I've indicated to pull into my drive.. only a matter of time before I don't catch it and the battery goes flat I am sure!
 
Cheers Elliot, I did see that bolt but couldn't quite work it if it was for this or ignition barrel set up - didn't have much time to poke around! Will look later in week and let you know. Did you have any joy on the seat switch?
 
Mine don't cancel either and I'm told the whole switch needs to be replaced as a unit. No fixing.
 
The mechanism wears inisde or can get gummed p with old grease so give it a spray of WD or similar penetrating oil off the car and work a few times. If that doesn't fix it, you'll need another one.
I have seat switches up here if you need one.

Andy why does your car have a Bar proximity meter on the dash.I take it you live near a pub cause it says you are less than 0.4 of a mile from the pub.
 
Is it so that you can find the nearest pub when the hairdrier thing goes wrong and leaves you at the side of the road?
 
Thanks for that thread, mine autocancels one way but not the other, will have to have a look at it.

LMAO! Actually that's not working well as the pub is more like 40 yards from my house - I'll have to get it calibrated [:D]

[:D][:D][:D] got to have a laugh Andy. Car looks really good.If you need any help with calibration I'm sure a few of us would come round and help measure the distance to the pub.May have to walk back and forth a few times though just to be sure.
 
Don't be afraid to open the unit up gents. Mine did this and I was ready to sort another so thought what the he'll I can't break it any further if it doesn't work now.. ......so I drilled out the rivets, cleaned it up and reseated the intervals so they sat correctly. Grease everything up,secure unit back together with fixing of your choice (self tappers in the correct size) and hey presto - a fully functional unit again. It's been like that for 18 months now without issue.

Hope this helps someone, a nice easy and cheap fix

Mike - Good point, I can't break what's already broken! Bizarrely it self cancelled today - once - I got excited but then it's back to normal. I did find a little black plastic tab thing on the floor mat today, maybe this is the missing link to the problem?? I'll find out when I take it to bits!
 
It's just that the spring and the pivot point are not doing what they're supposed to. Get some Heath Robinson thinking on it and save your money for shiny go faster bits [;)]

Let me know how you get on. Wish I'd done a write up for people now as it seems quite common. Sorry boys,as usual I wash pushed for time and just needed to get the job done

Hi all - just joined. I have had a 2001 Boxster 2.7 since late August. A few weeks after buying it the indicators played up exactly as mentioned on this thread. I got a new (genuine) part and my local garage replaced the switch a week or so ago but today the same problem has happened again!

From a quick look on the net it seems to be quite common. Any ideas as to why and what I can do to avoid this in future?
