Help, I need some info. The car is away for the winter, so what do I do to keep the battery in tip top condition.

1. Buy an £80 battery conditioner from Porsche and keep it plugged in for 3 months or
2. Disconnect the battery and buy a battery charger and trickle charge it every 6 weeks or
3. Is there anything else??

Opinions on what would be best for my baby would be appreciated. Jane, JK, I'm looking for serious answers!!!![:D][:D][:D]

also costco sell the ctek battery conditioners for about £35 - I would do this rather than remove the battery as its good to keep some "warmth" in the circuits.

Have you considered where you are storing the car - in my experience anything except the driest garage means your brake discs will rust and the pads will bind to them - also have you thought about flat spots on the tyres - are you inflating the tyres or taking the wheels off? Sometimes taking it off-road for the winter can be the most costly thing you do as if not done right you may need to replace some expensive parts.....if I were doing it again this winter I'd take the wheels off, leave the car on jack stands and also remove the pads/discs and bring the discs inside......had to replace a full set of discs on the GT3 because the garage wasn't as dry as I thought......
 
Carcoon includes a trickle charger and stops condensation on brakes.

Just put the tyres up to 40psi

Been using a Halfords charger/conditioner on my 996 Turbo for some weeks now and no problems. Price about £23, easy fitting and connection.

Use the car [:D] I did indeed buy the CTEK 3600 and it is on all the time and keeps the battery in top form cost approx £39 but as Greig said Costco are cheaper Lidel also do one similar for £14 .I had not used the car for about 10 days and the brakes where rusted on after this time so what they would be like after a 6 months lay up lord only knows .best is to have the car out side in a car port this is better than sitting in a damp garage for 6 months .a word off warning make sure if you put any form of heating in the garage it is a low usage I bought a heater out of Makro thinking it was a low usage and had it on 24/7 then I got my lecky bill in for £560 I though some thing is not right and it suddenly dawned on me the garage heater and it had used about £250 in electricity ,needless to say it is not being used any more [:D] I have it linked up to the outside street light now [:D][:D][:D]
 
why not use a pro car storage place ?

its gotta work out as less hassle than carcoons/garage heaters/taking wheels off/checking discs n pads/buying a fancy charger/running it all for 4 months and still not being able to get anything in the garage because its full of a car you arent using ..

my alfa is someone elses problem for less than the cost of a lockup.

and my bikes ?

I sell the battery's on ebay.. then buy new ones in the spring .. works out far cheaper than buying and using an optimate charger :)
 
Thanks for all your thoughts. The car is in a very dry garage/workshop which had the dehumidifier of for the first few days, the temperature is always around 55 degrees, not exactly warm, but not too cold either!
The discs are still shiney after me giving it the welly on Saturday, no rust and I'm getting new tyres next spring so they aren't such an issue. Car's left out of gear with the handbrake off.

Anyone going to Costco soon!!!???

For what it's worth I bought Accumate trickle charger because I could buy the cigarette lighter adapter which means no faffing about wiring the battery up ...and possibly driving away with it still connected to the wall. [8|][8|]

I understand that CTEK now sell the cigarette lighter thingy too so the choice is yours ...if you have a cigarette lighter socket ...

take it out at least month a month and give it a good run , when the salts away, sitting in the garage for all cars is bad - as well as rusty discs, flat batteries, flat spot on tyres you also have oil not pumping around the engine and seals starting to dry out,
