In-car phone module trouble

My 2007 model yr 997 has the original phone module - the one that needed its own sim card. I recently made the mistake of switching to another network only to learn after transferring the old number that the latest 3g or 4g sims are not compatible with the in-car phone unit. The old sim is now deactivated and no network providers are able to supply 2g or earlier standard sims. So, as the guy in the 3 store said "you're stuffed mate" and it would appear that the car phone module is now useless. Has any one else encountered this problem and found a solution or was I the only dinosaur still to be using this antiquated technology?

The solution as I see it is to ditch PCM 2.1 for modern Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer head unit. Win win with decent sat nav etc. included in the upgrade.
 
I'd be more than happy to do that but Porsche hadn't got round to adding Bluetooth connectivity back then. I can always use my every-day mobile with a hands-free adaptor but It will irk me somewhat not to be unable to make use of the in-built functionality of the in-car phone.
 
Thanks for the suggestion Geoff but I'd prefer to retain the car's as-built credentials.
 
In the Cayenne, with the same PCM, I used a Giff Gaff payg sim card which worked fine. I then set up a quick divert from my phone to the Giff gaff number so that calls came through the car phone. Took a few seconds each time to divert and later cancel the divert. That was all fairly recent and no issues with whatever g it was!
 
Thanks Alan, I'd never heard of giffgaff before but I've but just taken a look at their web site and if I can make this work it would be a great solution.
 
You just need to find out how to set up the divert function. With O2 it's *21**then the divert number and #. (i.e **21*+447777999111#) I store that in the contact list so it takes seconds to do. The cancel divert is ##21# again stored.

 
I am late to this one so apologise if stating the obvious: The early PCM phone module will be on the 800/900 frequency band for GSM.

Not all mobile providers use this frequency, a good list can be found on 4g.co.uk , somewhat ironically...

Giff Gaff does work.

Thanks for the technical insight Brian. I'd just assumed my latest sim from 3 was either 3g or 4g and that was the problem. I've checked the frequencies used by 3 and this is listed as 800 and 1800 mHz. So if at the time and location I tried the new sim the network was using 1800mHz then this might explain the failure to connect.
 
Im use a tracker that uses a 2G SIM. From Lyca Mobile. As Vodafone does car trackers they might also be able to provide you with a sim that works.
 
I do a similar divert but my car is PCM 3 and uses bluetooth so I use an old Blackberry that has sim access profile.

I tried this with a 3 sim but it did not work as 3 block block sim access profile. I got a Vodafone payg sim and it works perfectly.

I would suggest any of 800/900 networks will be fine, the 1800/1900 ones are less likely to work.

My new (2 months) Vodafone sim is multisized. My car is not here at the moment, minor maintenance. When I get it back later I will try the card in the slot just to check that the multi sized card works.

I will report the outcome....
 


Never slotted a sim / never used that function - nor the (highly slated) sat nav .
Both are available but tbh I have never thought about it [:)]

any of the over the counter SIMs (PAYG or Contract) with the exception of 3 (or any network who uses them) will offer a 'standard' 2FF SIM compatible with your PCM. WE (and our customers) use them all the time in 2G tracking units we sell, plus lots of M2M companies out there utilising 2G for the foreseeable (in the UK).
Certainly O2, EE, Vodafone, BT Mobile and Tesco Mobile all work.
3 (Three) has always been an issue as their network started at 3G (now 4G) but never offered 2G (GPRS).
