Im joining the Dark Side

Enjoy the trip Lali and, as others have said already, excellent write-up. I picked up my 993 from Exeter and had an epic drive back to London/Surrey. Simply sensational and remember all too well looking in the side mirrors at those amazing rear arches. Congrats again and well done on choosing a cracking car!

In short, Carreraboy's latter statement is bang on! & It is very true that the early moments of 911 ownership lives with you forever. It is still a very special feeling for me. & When I look back at that moment in time, the feelings of warmth and excitement felt is the same today every time I drive her. She is my jagged little pill. I too had interesting episodes in pursuit of ownership. It had to be just right, just so & I also made one small compromise; but for what it is worth, now, today it does not feel like a compromise at all and I would not want it any other way. The stresses in checks, finance ownership history et cetera were unbelievable; but the smiles, grins, warm feelings never seem to go away, even after a heavy service: the pocket money pain seems to wane with every whaling engine growl, throttle encouraged of course. "are you asleep?" - "no... I'm too excited" - Brilliant! A small price to feel like a child again and again and again. & Careful, time can zip by without you knowing whilst you are gazing in wonder and grinning. It is so nice to drive, to own and wake up to every driving day. ;-) “The engine fires into life and settles quickly into that distinctive flat 6 thrum. Instantly the smile arrives on my face, this is MY 911…!” – That noise never leaves you. Yours will always sounds slight different to everyone else’s. Like a mother and her new born, the connection is very much the same. Enjoy...

Nice!! RS body kit including the side skirts as well so properly done. Having owned 993 for about 8 years now they certainly are addictive and it wouldn't feel right not having one in the garage. Ian.

Wow.. so time certainly flies..

So Ive aligned my usernames across the world of the wide web!

But back to the car.

reading this old thread was odd, in the sense that nothing has changed..and everything has changed.

Allow me to explain - reading my "first drive" experience i felt that i could have written that last night, the car now has close to 120K miles on it. Which means in this rollercoaster market its either worth half what I bought it for, or 3 times as much, even with the blue dash! lol

The emotions that the car ignites every time i drive it are intense, it still starts with the 'ping' of the door closing and that still unmistakable "911 smell". You can't quite put your finger on why a 911 makes you feel, what you feel, but its something everyone feels when they drive their first.

and it never goes away.

More on the car.. So work thats been carried out...

Several Services - Kevin and the boys at EMC curse my name every time I bring it in, but they love it as much as I do. - nearly

Suspension set up by Chris at Centre Gravity - again more has been written about the attention to detail that Chris goes into when setting cars up and he has transformed the cars handling for me.

Engine - So yes its had some work, again taking a lead from the great write up on JackalsForge I quickly ended up with Aluminium cam covers and RS engine mounts. Along with RS clutch and LWFW to match.. and well while it was all out I also had a diff fitted.

Last year was a big year in terms of service costs... more smoke and dripping that I wanted on my garage floor so EMC spent some time rebuilding the top end and a few other bits. I also had the car fully polly bushed with the Powerflex kit.

Now before the engine work the LWFW allowed the revs to zip up like there was no tomorrow, but following the engine work WOW- WOWZERS!!

Everyone has their personal test route and following the work, the drivability was nothing short of otherworldly - the rate at which it picks up pace now means that I'm arriving at braking points significantly quicker, but its still absolutely no dramas for the car. The suspension set up is a touch higher than 'RS', but with the same rake.

Yes the addition of the diff brings with it some inherent understeer, but its so adjustable, I love it, love it, love it.

The Powerflex kit adds a level of rawness too... especially with the gearbox mount and combo with the diff makes it sound proper racecar.

So.. with the continuing epic weather this week.. the 993 is on commuter duties!!

more again later..

Like everyone has said, you never forget your first proper drive in a 911. It's (blimey) 22 years since my first proper drive, in my old black 1987 3.2. I lived in central London and you can't drive a 911 properly there. So a few weeks went by and I set off for Devil's Bridge in Wales. There were a few hairy moments - the river Severn had flooded the road at one point, I don't know how deep the water was but we made it through. Then the joy of the twisty mountain roads, I'll never forget that drive. Or that 3.2. I think it's still on the road, D911UJH if anyone knows anything about it.
