I went to a timed sprint event

Was your run #3 or later your fastest?
Road tyres suck!

You should try a hillclimb, just so different.
 
I'll have to try and work out which run #3 in the full external video is.

I can tell you that after lunch, as the 'commentary' suggested, I did get slower. Maybe my tyres went off or maybe I was just trying to have too much fun! It was after lunch that I spun.

Don't hillclimbs have walls? [:mad:]
 
I am the absolute Master of 'Peaked in Practice', and on a good track surface my first practice run is often my best of the weekend. I blame it on my abundant youth ([8|] as if.....)

This year in the 911 Bitza I've been much better at controlling this unfortunate trait and have had several progressive runs faster ans faster. Takes some doing mind.
Lack of competition is a good reason why I've managed it as I'm bottom of the pile almost every meeting (as Jonathan well knows) so the pressure to impress first time out is far less.

It is dead easy to try too hard!

All hillclimbs are very close to the scenary and every bit of it is bloody hard too.

But what fun [:)]
Give it a try and never go sprinting in the cones again.[;)]

Nothing would persuade me to take part in any airfield speed event.All airfield circuits contain sections of abrasive concrete - early death for your tyres. You need to be a nutter - or rather well off - to regularly use these places.
Present company excepted, of course!

No, I think 'nutter' is a very apt description of a sprinter come hillclimber.[&:]

And: you start the sport well off and then you find out you are no longer well off after a season or 3.[:(]
 
I rather like, ok, love, my car and would hate to see it get damaged.

I agree about the tyres though, they have loads of tread left but have certainly been killed on that day.

At least tyres can be replaced easily, even those kwik-fit nutters can manage it [:D]

I think I'd like to try a circuit. It was annoying to get to the end only to have to wait ages for another run. It was a hot day and sitting in the car with arms & legs covered while wearing a helmet was not the best part of the event.

Any circuits that don't have any close walls?
 
Went to the Silverstone classic meeting last year in the Bitza 911.
Went on the parade lap on the lunchtime with a million others except our 'leader' in an 997 RS thingy I think held back from the pack in front...and then blasted off!

We did the GP circuit and the speed and space were awsome (esp when used to the confines of a hillclimb)

Apart from finding out the brakes were cr@p and the wife had turned snow white it was a really great experience. Not often I get to stretch the car in 5th.

Just one thing though.

There are a lot of close things on a real race track, far more hazardous than a good tree on a hillclimb, that is about 10 other cars all aiming for the same apex as you are......now that WAS scarey.

Nathan, PCGB are staging a trackday at Snetterton on Tuesday 11 November.No close walls, door-banging nutters etc. Just amateur gentlemen circuit drivers.Great value at £170.

My Bitza is done for 2008, soon to be banished from the garage into ahibernation for the winter.
I need the space in the garage.

Never done a track day of any sorts, and would only do one with some good brakes.

The braking bit is the only 'weak' part of my 911, but you hardly need them on a hillclimb esp compared to a track.
I do like the idea of a Porsche only day though as I can trust you lot I recon.

Mind you, the Lola Porsche could be a very different affair. No brake problems with that one, just the driver...[&:]

Must be the rally/hillclimb driver's brain at work! I have always reckoned that a wall or tree isn't going to move, and it's my choice whether I hit it or not.:rolleyes: On a race circuit, you can be doing everything right, and have your car written off by an idiot who isn't. There are no excuses in hillclimbing. If my car gets damaged, it's my fault. Period. [;)]

Having said that, I'm looking forward to lapping Silverstone GP circuit this week-end on the Norwich Union Classic in our 914/6.......

Good analogy - it IS a totally different sport to circuit racing, not as PCGB sometimes seem to think something that you do if you can't afford to go circuit racing.[8|]

I've never done a track day - can you only overtake on the corners then? They ought to introduce that into F1![8D]

F!: not much interest in that lot. Wife tells me when it's over and who won.
Saves a lot of time.(better spent in the garage)
Sadly, WRC is much the same, but the Frenchman is a very deserved winner (he is sure to win this year?) What skill, so much more than FI (tin hat firmly in place)

I guess hillclimbinh is seen as the poor mans sport, the old man's sport and all a bit poitless. Much is paralleled to drag racing too. (both speed events like Rallies)

Give me a 12 foot wide track, 90 mph and trees/armco as close neighbours any weekend to some hot shots in hot hatch/Locatorfield etc.

If it all goes wrong you can have the discussion with yourself as nobody else is to blame.[;)]
 
I think I want to try a circuit as I found it annoying to keep stopping at the end of the run. I'm guessing that as I keep going round and round I can eventually get the right lines [:)] well, maybe anyway

I agree about the hot hatch brigade [:'(]

The frenchman is like a robot behind the wheel, he's awesome. Not as entertaining as the great Colin McCrae though.

PCGB trackdays are, of course, private. They appeal to a far more classy type of automobilist.Such is the rep of bossman Sir Steven Kevlin that good track behaviour is absolutely guaranteed.
The other point is that unless this particular fixture is well supported this time, there will be no repeat next season.Thus no trackday for the Anglians.[:(]
