Still fitted to a car... [;)]

Some of you may remember it - it's Jon Lavis's old one. It's an S2, with 230k on it.

I remembered the car from the pcgb forum - Jon spent a fortune on it. One of the main issues with S2's is cam / camchain wear - this had the cams (£300+ each), chain, tensioners etc.. replaced 5 years ago. He also fitted KWv3 suspension, H&S exhaust, 17" split rims (shame he curbed 2 of them quite badly), cup mirrors, 968 handles & a carbon fibre splitter. The sills were repaired & it was resprayed.

It has gone sat around pretty much for the last 4 years, not done many miles.

I had it inspected by Andy Moss, who fitted the cams etc.., who thought it was still in reasonable order. It drives very well - tight & solid, but is a bit shabby in places inside. Idle oil pressure is good, gearbox is quiet. One abs sensor needs replacing & the front calipers have plate lift & need sorting. I have already bought a full set F&R fully refurbed calipers in anticipation (a very nice job from Finland.. [:D]). The leather sports seats are pretty good, passenger one is in great shape. The interior needs a good clean. Sunroof isn't quite working properly, rear hatch catches need freeing up, n/s window not working, mainly small stuff. There was also a carbon fibre rear spoiler kit that came with the car - didn't know about this until I collected it today[:D].

So, for the money I paid, pretty good.

However, there are signs of corrosion - o/s/r near suspension mount, & some bubbling on the sills. There is a chance that it is more serious.

From here, the first thing to do is to take it to one of ph's bodyshop men to have a good poke around and price up the bodywork. From there I need to make a decision

Option 1.
Prep as a "clubsport" track car - lighten as much as possible, retain carpets - no cage, fit lightweight buckets.

Option 2.
Rust is uneconomical to repair - scrap it & sell the bits.

Stand by for further updates.....

I remember this car. Lots of good bits - KWs not even mentioned in the ad!!
If you decide to move the wheels on let me know.

Well he had all the receipts, and knew exactly how much they cost....

Not sure about the wheels - 2 rims are quite badly chewed, but nothing a couple of hundred quid won't fix... I do fancy something lightweight though - 16" cups maybe, and I definitely don't need 255 section rears to put down all that power..

Parts for sale will wait until I have the bodywork diagnosis - I can already sense the vultures descending for the cup mirrors.... [;)]

The interior needs a good clean.

No it doesn't, get the scraper out and finish off with some polish, carpets are for girls [;)]

Oh and welcome back to 944 ownership [:D] Is it coming to Rutland?

I prefer sound of option 1, the S2 remains a great potential track day car, despite what others may say. Better alternative to breaking thats for sure, looks like your already going down this route if you've already purchased calipers.

Red Porkers look great with black wheels IMO.[;)]

I'm aiming for a clubsport look, not a racecar look. I still have good high frequency hearing & want to keep it [;)] Carpets don't weigh much once the soundproofing is out anyway. It's definitely my intention to save the car, but there might just be a point where it doesn't make financial sense. Amazing really because it looks so good on the surface, paint is nice & shiny, but I know what can be underneath...

March 4th isn't a good date for me (wife's birthday on the 3rd). If the car can be saved, which is the plan it's likely to be in pieces by early March.
Silverstone evenings will definitely be on the agenda. Hoping to go to Spa later this year as well.

If I can keep it, the sports seats will be going, and probably the cup mirrors & 968 handles - they seem a bit pointless to me tbh. Wheels will probably go.

David - I'd be tempted by a swap with clubsports [;)] Not so keen on black wheels though.

Welcome back Ed [:)] I really hope the bodywork is very minor and another one can be saved/ put back to good use

Hi Ed
Glad to see you back in the fold, even if you never really went away!
Wife can come to Rutland too [:D] (Although I couldn't drag mine there!)
Let us know where and when she'll be out (S2 not wife)

If you do sell the parts off I would be interested in the mirrors.

There's an invoice in the file for the mirrors - £495!! - that's before painting & fitting. No wonder they fetch good money secondhand.

I do fancy something lightweight though - 16" cups

Cups aint light in my experience - standard D90`s are lighter, the forged D90`s are light and their design is to draw air across the brakes but their age means they can crack if used in anger.

Personally I`d keep it as a track car and if the sills are gone then when doing them weld in a couple of tubes each side so you can jack/support as a rally car and cut holes for the TB so you can reindex it easily.

Whatever - enjoy.

17" cups may be heavier than d90's, but the 16s are pretty light. Almost as light as fuchs I think.
