How long have you owned your 964?

I bought my 964 about 6 years ago, from Northway Porsche near Reading. I reckon it was one of the last cheap 964's on the market, as they seemed to shoot up soon afterwards. I remember Ray saying a year later that he regretted selling it and not keeping it. It came with Cup 2 alloys which just didn't look right on a 964. Fine on a 993. I managed to find a set of cheap genuine Cup 1's, got both sets refurbished and got my money back for the Cup 2's so was well happy with that.

I saw that the first owner was Porsche Cars GB, so I asked them if they had any history on it. By surprise, they did and my car was loaned to the Footwork Arrows F1 team in 1991. At the time, Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver was CEO so this was probably his car. They even sent me a letter confirming this so adds some great history to the car. It came with all MOT's and a stack of receipts so lots of history.

I love the car and is definatly a keeper and is great to drive. I've replaced the faded rear lights, all door and side moulding seals, swapped out the steering wheel for an OEM Clubsport wheel (much thicker and better to use), load of brake and hydraulic pipes but the rear nearside wing needs a bit of bubbling attention. Been thinking of an RS front suspension upgrade to make it more comfortable and look better but the bodywork will take priority.

I am Staffordshire based and have used Ninemeister in Warrington in the past, so was considering them for the engine rebuild (they have a good name for air cooled engine builds)? However, I have just discovered another independent local to me called MLR. I plan to make contact with them this week to discuss their services?

Great history and background - a keeper for that if nothing else!

IMHO, can't imagine you'd ever go wrong sticking to 9m. Very air-cooled respected and have created some amazing engine build projects. Discussed with them many years back a 3.8 rebuild. Never heard of MLR I'm afraid.

I have great respect for Colin and his team at 9M, I believe MLR to be owned by the another original partner of 9M Marc Clowes? We will see how the conversation goes?

I am considering a DIY rebuild on my 964's engine one day.

I have heard it is very complex and loads of parts but I would certainly take a stab, if I run into trouble then I would have to get a specialist involved but there are a number of videos and books, threads etc out there with info.

The hardest bit in my head is dropping the lump out in my garage! :)

Definitely will. Mine has a few annoying leaks which bug me, not bad enough to warrant a rebuild but it is something I want to do myself. Removing the engine is my biggest worry. Once my house move is complete and I sort the garage out, I'll look to start making some moves toward dropping it out and stripping it down.
