How does your other half view your 944 ?

Surprisingly my wife quite likes mine, not to drive particularly but as a passenger with the roof down, we went out on Friday and she was quite happy, Saturday evening she asked if I fancied "going out in the car" for a drive which is unheard of.

She always calls it my mid life crisis car, she doesnt seem to have any animosity towards it like other cars I have had and doesnt resent me spending time, or within reason money on it.

Normally she hates certain cars, Fiat Coupe Turbo may as well have been me bringing home another woman, didnt like my Golf GTI's. I think part of it is I can afford it, also it isnt a lot of money or obnoxiosuly flash, in fact she finds it a bit amusing.

How does your Mrs (or Mr) see your 944 ?

My missus likes the Porsche partly because it's comfortable, quiet and refined compared to the MK2 Escorts which have no radio, no electric seats, no air con and are noisy and uncomfortable on a long journey.

BUT, the main reason she dislikes the Escort is the 'people' who are now associated with them and the anal attitude they have to the cars and the back stabbing that goes on about peoples cars. This has been fueled by rising values of the cars and the spare parts for these cars.

Hopefully, 944's won't end up like this [:)]

Jo really likes the 944 - she drives it on occasion too, quite spiritedly ! [:)] Our third ever date was spent at Silverstone Classic a couple of years ago when we were lucky enough to be part of a "parade" round the track for a few laps which got quite lively which is just one of now many shared happy memories the car has for us.

When we get married in a couple of weeks we are heading off on honeymoon in it (MoT pass permitting !) [:)]

J4cko,same as mate [:)].Sarah really likes my 944 Turbo and, finds it all rather amusing [:D]. It's the first car of mine that she actually does like and, doesn't mind me spending a few quid on him (although she would go ballistic if she were to uncover my full programme for him)[;)]. She totally hated all my other cars, especially "Yobo" and the Skyline(which she utterly despised). Reckons I looked like a "Boy Racer" having a mid-life crisis!! Silly cow []!!

Mine tolerates the S2, although it's always "Your Car" whenever she mentions it! I think she likes the fact that it doesn't break down on us but doesn't like the fact that it goes fast. I have offered to downgrade to a turbo so as not to frighten her as much but she didn't like that idea either.

I think she's happy that I don't spend too much cash on it. She doesn't see the need to spend as much time on it as I do tho'. (Although she is very quick to point out anything that she sees wrong with it - rattles, odd noises and so on.)

Oli.

Turbos are slower in the hands of less talented drivers. Those who cant be in the right gear t the right time can always buy an S2 which will go reasonably quickly simply by pressing the pedal on the right.

I may just buy a turbo to compare and be objective, have done it before, at school, Commodore 64 vs Spectrum, I did losts of paper rounds so had both and could mediate in playground discussions and
had both 8 valve and 16 valve Golf GTI's, definitely the Commodore 64 if forced to choose but the Spectrum had its charm, probably the 8 valve Golf in most situations but the 16 was hard to ignore and I think with S2 versus Turbo it will be the same deal.

Then there is the other dilemma, I now quite like having a cab, went into work feeling crap this morning, full of cold but put the roof down and it was lovely, most turbos are coupes so would miss tha or would have to spend 15 grand on a turbo cab and not sure if Cab and turbo go together despite being rare.

So, turbo for all year round, track days, going too fast and a cab to drive round and chill , think I need a go of a turbo sometime soon, only driven 2 944's, mine and a 1988 S I coerced my dealer mate into buying as it seemed cheap (ex lease) and he got stuck with it, took a hit and part exed it against an 928 S4, drunk a bit too much and tried to outrun plod down the A34, which is pretty easy give 300 odd bhp versus the 65 of a Pug 309, stopping on your drive and turnign the lights of on a white 928 is not the smartest move though.

Am full of a cold and am rambling....

Lin loves my 944, she bought it for me nearly 12 years ago

She loves:

The time I spend out of the house in the garage
How little money is spent keeping her on the road
The fact that her car gets cleaned before the 944
944 days out come second to anything else that may be planned
Porsche Design clothes are cheap rubbish and not worth buying
944 wheels are so cheap
944 track day cars are also very cheap to buy

I may have mis-understood what she actually said!! [:D][:D]

We had several Mark II Escorts and loved them dearly back when they were seen as valueless old tat. We used to go all over in them. I think I paid £1600 for my last RS2000 and about £800 for my last 1600 Ghia, and I think £595 for a very sweet little 1300 four-door that was ultra-smooth, if not the fastest thing on the planet. Ran them for years. It was quite nice to have something that no-one else cared about or thought you were trying to project some sort of image.

Mrs LT was somewhat wary of the 944T when I bought it but has warmed to it more recently.

My wife really can't see the point in my 944 turbo, and only went in it for the first time last weekend (a bit over 2 years after I bought it!). She always takes the Range Rover before any of our other current or recent cars (which include a general selection of Lambo, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche offerings). Apparently becuase the RR is bigger, it's better. Which is not something I entirely agree with...

My better half has gone from thinking I was stupid to want my first Lux, through quite enjoying it, to really liking the more comfortable S2, to detesting it now that it's sucked up so much money that should have gone on other things! []

A few years of trouble-free 944 ownership would be needed for her to come around again.

Some of the awful wife-related remarks here make me shudder. Emma likes MX-5s, but she would prefer a Boxster.

Since my first Porker was a 944S2.....

Sue loved it and used to occasionally commute in it -said she liked nothing better than viewing the cars rear 'hips' in the wing mirrors before nailing it and watching cars behind disappear....[:D]

Imagine if in 1988 you were in your RS 2000 at the lights and a smooth chap, probably a pilot or something pulls alongside and you in a 944 Turbo and gives it some, you give chase, all 110 bhp bwarping away, bit of smoke (from your engine) and the 944 is gone, even your big bore Peco exhaust, high lift Kent cam and fishnet Recaros couldnt help, who would have though that 25 years later your miserable old Escort would be worth more, I like the RS2000 but god they are over rated unless modded to death.

My other half loves driving my S2, hates being a passenger and hates how much time and money I spend on it. She also guesses at how much I've spent on it in total which I deny and tell her to stop being silly. In actual fact of course her guesses are considerable underestimates... [:D]
