How does water leak into the cabin?

Hi all,

I know there are many posts on the forum about the rear roof drains on the 987 Boxster (and they have been really useful in helping to clear rubbish out of my drains).

I’ve had water under the drivers seat (thankfully not the passenger seat!) and have removed some rubbish from the rear drain.

However I’m trying to work out how water ends of on the floor of the car in the first place. I’d sort of understand if the drip tray overflowed and then the carpet against the rear bulkhead got wet, but the problem only seems to apply to the carpet on the floor. Can anyone explain how water gets into the passenger cabin?

Now when I pour 1 litre of water into the drip tray I get 1 litre back out, so hopefully my issues are resolved - however I think it’ll be a very long time before my carpet is dry again sadly…

Hi Matt.
Just a thought if drains are all clear,
We had a similar issue years ago wet just behind the drivers seat.
Could not fathom it out an indy eventually found the culprit a tiny nick in the membrane around under the back of the roof.
Might be worth a try if still getting water ingress.

Thanks - when you say the membrane do you mean the rubber drip trays or is it further back?

I did toy with replacing the drip trays, but they do look in good condition - although there does seem to be a gap between the drip trays and the plastic moulding at the top of the rear wing (but this is the same on both sides of the car)

The rear membrane is often called a drip tray its a foam rubber material under the clam shell inside the car .
Google it to give you a better idea.
Not sure if its common or not but a tiny split in the wifes 986 was the culprit in our case.
If all other avenues have been exhausted might be worth checking.

The water rises above the level of one of the structural plates by the bulkhead and then falls down into the footwell.

There are "deflector" plates that clip on the roof arms each side - they look like they don't serve any function but they do close off a route for water to go the wrong way.
