How do the courtesy light work?

Hi Guys, I have a 1988 porsche 911 carrera 3.2 Targa with a few niggly electrical faults. How dose the courtesy light work?
The light works fine manually by toggling the lens, its the auto side via the doors which i need to confirm. Dose the light turn on and off immediately when the door opens or closes or is there any delay in turning off. (i'm trying to verify if there is any connection to a relay)

When we owned our 3.2, I had to take out the door switches and play about with them to get them to make a solid contact. They are "push to break" type switches and I think moisture gets into them (from memory) causing corrosion sufficient to stop electrical conduction.
