How do I adjust the handbrake cable?

I need to adjust the handbrake cable situated behind the handbrake lever. I have adjusted at the wheels.

I have looked on here and RennTech but cannot find any isntructions how to do this. Maybe I have missed it somewhere.

Can anyone point me in the right direction how to do this please?

Peter,
I would imagine the handbrake cables and connections are the same in the Gen 1 and 2 cars. Having had the centre console out recently (because the button couldn't be pushed in! See here)

I seem to recall that the handbrake has a self-adjusting mechanism on it.

Yes they are self adjusting. Every now and then the handbrake lever will appear to have extended travel and make a loud click sound as it adjusts.

Hi Geoff and Alan

Thanks for your replies.

Even though I have adjusted at each wheel the lever has far too much travel.

Last week when I thought the handbrake on - it wasn't - and it slid down the drive backwards with the door part open! It came to rest with a crunch against the wifes car. Result - £450 damage to the wifes 6 month old mini. Thankfully only paint was scratched on the edge of the 911.

It's always had too much travel and I really need to sort this out. If its self adjusting then its not doing a very good job!

So do I when I park and switch off the engine !!! She was struggling to close the garage side door so I left the car to help her. And it costs me dearly.

Hindsight is wonderful eh!

I have just returned from PC Exeter and I asked them the question. Indeed the handbrake end is self-adjusting (or should be!) Maybe pulling it up to the full extent with the button pushed in a few times might wake it up?! For the adjustment at the wheels they tell me that the star shaped wheel accessible though a (wheel) bolt hole should be rotated until the shoes bind and then backed off 5 clicks. This is to allow for any heat build up and will prevent the shoes from binding. Apparently the only difference between Gen 1 and 2 cars is the number of teeth on the ratchet (Gen 2 has a lot more[;)])

Thanks Alan, that really helpful - I appreciate that.

I adjusted the wheels at the weekend and it was quite and easy process.

I will yank the lever towards the roof and see what happens!!! I will report back - probably with a dented roof from the lever [:D]

I don't really understand why these handbrakes should need any adjustment - other than if the cable stretches slightly. Unless, of course, someone is in the habit of driving off down the road with it partially on! The shoes shouldn't get any wear as such, should they?
If you need to remove the centre console because you suspect the self-adjuster isn't doing what it should then there is a great guide here......

The only difference to yours being the PDK knob, I believe!!

Well I tried yanking the handbrake lever several times quite hard and its made no difference. It's still about 9 clicks before its on fully.

If the self-adjuster is not working then it may well be covered by the warranty. I'll speak to the OPC and see what they say. If not I don't fancy taking out the centre console myself as I am bound to do some damage somewhere!

Peter

Have you had this car a year from the Bolton PC? Sorry re your tale re AM car.

Soulution for home parking until you get handbrake fixed.

Park sideways across the drive - I've yet to see one roll sideways down the drive[;)]

P.S. Always on hand to help
