Hot starting again.. or lack thereof

My cars hot start problem has become more persistent lately. It always turns over quite happily, but won't start when it's been running. This happens maybe 20% of the time now. It usually seems to sort itself out after a couple of minutes, but the novelty has worn a bit thin.

I've noticed that on the occasions the car doesn't start the tach just sits at 0. The rest of the time the tach registers instantly and the car starts. Am I correct in assuming that, given this symptom, the most likely cause is the speed or reference sensor?
 
Try the sped or reference sensor or could be a coil starting to break down. Check you rotor arm and also your cap for corrosion or cracking as well. Worth cleaning out and seeing if there is any condensation in side as well. Have seen this before with another S2,

I had this type of problem... completely cured by removing the immobiliser... illogical as that appears. Mine would occasionally have a cold starting problem as well, when again, the tacho needle didn't bounce. It latterly developed into cutting out whilst driving along.

The DME relay is the other regular problem component - have you swapped that out? Is it an S2 or N/A or Turbo? If it is an S2 there is also an ignition amplifier that I believe can cause such problems - think it went back in the brain on other models.
 
The S and S2 had an ignition amplifier. Sit down in the inside of the inner wing behind the headlamp unit on the passenger side. the do go as well. 944GM had a similar problem with that.

It's a 1986 2.5 Lux.

The DME relay was replaced with new one a few months ago. Hoping I can get it sorted before needing to tackle something with the immobiliser!
