Hot start up problems (yes another topic! sorry!)

ORIGINAL: JamesO

Well explained, I kept it simple as I was using a phone to type and misworded it a bit, sorry if it seemed blunt.

james blunt ? surely not [:D] ..... I'll get me coat [:D]

Don't worry I'm always making mistakes particularly about the differences between early and late cars. Unfortunately there are a lot of errors out there on the net and sometimes I just have to rely on what I read in the absence of personal experience with the early 944

The standalone turbo project sounds interesting hope you'll keep us informed of progress.[;)]

Thank you Peanut!

I'll forward that onto my mechanics [:)]

If you or anyone else has any other thoughts that would be greatly appreciated. I have a gut feeling it's a knackered ECU - not from any diagnostics - but knowing my luck of late!!!

Ok so an update - am pretty cheesed off. Still no car on the road, and I've been forced to go and buy a new (2nd) car.

ECU went off for testing, we got it back a few days later and they couldn't find any faults. Despite us seeing burn marks and blackness... so very surprised. We asked them anyway to redo all the points anyway, it's come back and not made any difference.

The last few days my garage has gone back to the beginning, and with the aid of the service manuals gone through everything again - but no joy.

They still think its an ECU problem, so I'm probably going to buy another ECU today, then give that a try.
But to be honest if it's not that perhaps they are stumped and it's beyond them, shame - they've been spot on over the last 2-3 years about everything.

Therefore I'm in serious need of help, and really could do with - as Peanut suggested - "a Bosch specialist in fuel injection and engine management systems"
Or someone / a garage that has years and long experience in dealing with these issues.

I'm located in Nottingham.

Can anyone help?

[]

Cheers,

Al

sorry to hear that Al. it must be incredably frustrating.

Heres a link for a local Bosch service specialist , just enter your post code. I've no idea how close it will be to you.

Its a pity you are not closer as I would happily try and help . At least we could substitute some of my car's components .

I could write up a schedule of tests for your spannerguy but to be honest there are so many faults that could give rise to the issues you are having it could be a very costly exercise.

your best bet by far is to take it to the Bosch specialist. if you can't drive the car there then I've heard you can push it down the road and get the AA /RAC out to relay the car to your chosen garage..... ahem... cough .

A bosch specialist will be able to hook the car up to Bosch test equipment and also to download your car's fault codes etc. They'l have it pinpointed within an hour I should think.

Let us know how you get on. Pity about the 2nd car...I've just had to have a perfectly good 2000 silver met Ford Mondeo Ghia with A/C towed to the breakers for £75.00 scrap value it cost me £550 6 months ago and now I couldn't give it away [8|]

Hey guys!

I have an update and some great news!

My baby is back, sorted and better than ever!!

This epic saga has dragged on longer than it should by a poor ECU tester and repair 'experts' - who sent back the ECU saying they could find no faults, despite there being black scorch marks inside! So we went back to square one and went through everything again, and also paying attention to everything in the service manuals, but we kept coming back to the same conclusion - it must be the ECU.
So I took a punt and risk on a cheap one selling on FleaBay, which arrived mid-week - we put it on and there was an immediate improvement and difference! Now we knew we back on track and close to the finish line, so doing some more electrical testing we were able to see clearly some final minor problem areas - replaced the ignition coil, some wiring that had seen better days, battery connections (*** note that was missed stupidly, don't forget to look at this if you have similar problems - easy to forget! doh! ***), further cleaning on various sensors and air flow meter, and voila! Working as it should! And seemingly much better than before!

Not only does it now start on the button (no need to hold the key in and dipping the throttle to help it - although if very hot I might still have to), but it also drives a LOT more positively and tightly [:)] Idles smoothly and sits tightly on 800rpm. Plus some lights on the dash that weren't working - are now!

So there you go guys. Definitely ECU related and ignition coil had seen better days, we did do an awful lot on this so maybe other things that were replaced/improved prior to the new ECU needed to be done but we don't know now.

For the benefit of anyone else coming across this topic now or in the future....

**** Do you think driving it with a knackered alternator caused all these problems? Therefore, if your alternator goes DO NOT DRIVE and risk it? ****
I'm interested to know.
