High speed daddy !!!

It was great to see the 996TT top the high speed list at a recent Bruntingthorpe run organised via PISTONHEADS, the TT (X50) maxed out at 190 mph ahead of a Lambo, various TVR' s, Nobles, RS4' s, 993' s & even an Ultima. Great stuff !!!

Wow! Not sure I would have had my money on it, but an impressive result nonetheless. Just proves Porsche' s are to be used and that the abilities aren' t imaginary or under ideal conditions, real people can extract the performance in the real world (hopefully also time after time without it blowing up or requiring a grand' s worth of servicing).

Rgds, Stuart.

Hi Stuart, interestingly the 996TT topped the table at the last run, followed by a 993TTS (or was it an RSR) & a BoxterS managed 156mph beating a few TVR scragglers, interesting !!!

Out of interest, here is a cut n paste of the top 20 speeds from that Pistonhead day.

Porsche 996 Turbo Xpack - 190
Porsche 993 Turbo S - 184
Porsche 993 Turbo - 183
Ultima Can-am - 183
Audi RS4 - 182
993 Turbo - 181
Porsche 996 Turbo - 181
Lamborghini Diablo VT - 180
Red Audi RS4 - 178
TVR Tuscan Red Rose - 175
Ferrari 512 - 175
TVR Cerbera 4.5 - 175
Ferrari 360 - 175
Audi RS4 - 174
Porsche 911 Turbo2 -172
Ferrari 348 GTS - 169
Porsche 993 C2S - 163
Porsche 993 - 162
Noble M12 - 161
Porsche993 - 161

These were taken through a radar trap positioned 1/4 mile from the end of a 2 mile runway, there was apparently a 10mph tail wind and the track was not bone dry.

Once through the radar trap the driver has just 1/4 mile (400 yards) to brake to a manageable speed in order to make a 90 degree right hand corner. Bear in mind that at 180 mph it takes just 5 seconds to travel those 400 yards []

I have never really been interested in these straight line top speed days, much preferring trackdays and corners, but after reading all the posts from the participants of this day I WANT TO GO ON THE NEXT ONE [8D][8D][8D]

The Lambo driver had only owned his car a few days and was still getting to know it (he' ll be back for the next one). Most impressive performance for me was the Audis

Paul thanks for the post but you missed a few off the bottom, cheers, right I' m off to try & find the last run' s info.

I only posted the top 20 over 160mph so as not to throw off my scarey 400 yards in 5 seconds for braking calculation [] I don' t expect to get up to those speeds but will bring an anchor in the hatchback just in case [:D]

I just did a quick calculation, if you are interested.

Under dry conditions on a reasonable surface, you should be able to manage 1g of deceleration under braking.
This means you can go from 100-0 mph in 100m. (I have tried this and it is about right).

For 180-0 mph, for the same rate of deceleration (i.e. the brakes don' t fade halfway through) you would stop in around 325m. (I have not tried this!)

Interestingly if you want to go from 180-50mph (so you can make the corner) you still need just under 300m.

I believe more than 1g may be possible if you really stand on it, so the distance will be less.

Rgds, Stuart.

Another little snippet, that ties in with some of the other posts on brakes, in slowing from 180-0 mph each front brake generates enough energy to boil 4.4 litres of cold water according to my quick back-of-an-envelope calculation.

Rgds, Stuart.

Edited, since I was out by a factor of 10, should be 4.4 litres not 44 (thought it looked a bit high).

interestingly Stuart, the guy who posted top speed on both runs had his car serviced after the first run & the OPC found disc cracking, due to excessive heat, so as you say the heat generated by your C4S under heavy braking is substantial.
I have tried to find the earlier run' s details as these included more standard 996' s for comparison, but can' t locate it, never mind. The thing that makes Porkers great is their all round ability, grunt to over 170 MPH, but brakes & handling to match, not much would keep up with your C4S point to point !

After a quick drive on Saturday to dry the discs out after washing the car (only about 4-5 miles), a couple of mins after stopping I thought I would see how hot the discs were, given that I didn' t go that hard since as the oil wasn' t warm till the last mile. I didn' t feel too much heat, so I touched one very briefly with the back of a finger (so I could pull it off quickly). I burnt the top layer of skin straight onto the disc, it was etched there afterwards. Fortunately I was quick enough so it did not burn me, just removed the top layer.
After this, I can most strongly recommend that you treat the discs with a lot of respect.

Rgds, Stuart.

Most impressive performance for me was the Audis

Was it a standing start? and if so does 4wd help that much off the line that it negates any handicap (transmission losses) at high speed?

Tony

(p.s. what model of 944 was it?)

The Audi' s had been beathed on slightly......as much as 500+bhp! still very impressive
Tony, 184mph from a standing start

Paul

Paul.S. thanks for posting the first run, velly interesting (996TT still on top!!!!!!!!)
Paulr....I was under the impression that the cars had to negotiate a fairly sharp bend before giving it maximum down the straight. So to get to the top of the tree you need handling, grip n grunt & braking ability. Appreciating that it was mainly Porkers that took part, it was still good to see various TVR' s, Ferrari' s etc etc, further down the tables & the Porkers on top !!!!!

Tony, The first time they did this (back in February) they all had a rolling start having to negotiate a fairly sharp corner before entering the straight.

This time PaulR requested some standing starts, which makes his 184 mph all the more impressive.

PaulR, I know the gearing is not right but any chance you' d ever take your supercharged 944 along?

Paul S
The bottom corner is not that sharp, but by the time you' ve got round the corner and back on the gas the car is doing about 85mph and 200m down the runway. From a standing start, the speed/distance figures are about the same ( actually only 2mph between the two )
The 944 is a lot more fun on the bends so trackdays/racing only ( thats if PCGB ever cash the cheque and let me race )

Paul

Have you entered any of the Open races this year yet Paul? I know most of the 944 Register are extremely interested to see your car in action.

I saw the rain soaked Mallory Park last year. Was a very good meeting, despite the rain but it was a crying shame when the Le Mans Jag Xk220 stuffed it into the barriers []

Paul
I,ve been trying for months to enter, PCGB have got the cheque, but dont want to cash it/give a decission on allowing me to run. If they keep thinking about it for long enough the season will be over!, saves having to say NO. I feel that old/front engined/watercooled Porsche' s standing a chance of doing well is not what PCGB/PorscheGB want, what other reason could there be?

Paul

Well I hope they let you in soon Paul, I know there are hundreds of Porsche enthusiasts that have followed the progress and development of your car on a number of Porsche forums around the world.

I thought the Open was designed to allow members to race their cars that are no longer eligible for the other Series. I don' t know all the rules and regulations but there are different classes dependng on how modified the car is. That is how Richard Chamberlains Turbo monster [] can compete

Paul S

Should we transfer this thread to the 944 and Titanic 944 forums and give / get Paul R some support.

Is that something you would want Paul R?
