HID suppliers?

Ace Parts - they will give a discount to club members.

You could also put a request on Wanted part of Forum - bought my second ( main beam ) set that way.

Really worth while doing - you will wonder how you managed without them!!

I'm seriously considering upgrading to HID's as the headlights on my car are pretty poor - possibly worse than my old 3.2!

This might sound like a dim question (please excuse the pun), but do you fit HID's to dipped or main beam (or both)? For me, the main beam isn't too bad, the dipped is barely brighter than a candle.

Some people do both, but most of us only do the dipped beam. I wouldn't do the main beam as HIDs take a second to warm up before they come on, so if you have to flash someone there may be a delay. I could be wrong, but my dipped beams take a second or two to come on properly.

Had HID fitted to my 993 C4 Cab 1995 about a year ago at JAZ Porsche in Wembley 0208 903 1118 (speak to steve for advise). Wish I had done it years ago. I do about 10,000 miles a year and worth every penny.

I fitted HID to only the dipped beam on my 993 - well worth doing in my opinion. The other sets fitted to Audi A4 and Boxster have all had that small delay before the reach operating brightness so have not fitted to main beam. Most time spent on dipped anyway and they are a big improvement on my car. In addition finding space for two set of "ballasts" etc could be an issue, although I noted that ACE appear to have description for fitting all parts in the 993 light unit. No connection with ACE or HIDS4U- just my tuppence worth.

How have you got on with them as main-beam?
As others have suggested I find there is a delay in light-up time on my first set (on dip) so I have never actually done the main beams because I can't see it being practical (eg winding around country lanes with occassional on-coming traffic).

But I'd love to have them on main beam too and originally intended to. Just interested in how you find them.

Have had no probs. with them on mains - given they take a little time to come up to power but even at switch on they are as good as OE mains. I, too, was concerned about using them on flash but they seem fine in that way as well.

HID dips are essential in my opinion if you do much night driving - Mains just complete the picture and I certainly wouldn't go back to OE to ensure that lights match the performance of the car.

Most people will fit the HID kit to the dipped beams as this provides the maximum benefit. When the kits were first introduced they were upwards of £500 per set and fitting two sets was prohibitively expensive. You can now pick them up at nearer £100 per set.

You'll get the biggest benefit by using them on your dipped beam. It's really up to you whether you pay the extra to have them on your main beam as well.

Diminishing returns, 80/20 rule etc.

If you want more light on Mains for occasional use but don't want HIDs, Aceparts used to sell 100W bulbs, may still do. I'm not sure how they stand legally but when was the last time an MOT man checked the wattage on your bulbs?
 
I'm a bit nervous about 100w bulbs given that I leave them on for long periods on some of my late night drives up in the Highlands, but I have fitted Osram Nightbreakers - normal wattage but about 85% brighter - they certainly make a difference.

But HID dips + Nightbreakers for mains are still not as good as the boring old hologens in my RAV4 (which is a lot slower).

I'm tempted to give a second set of HIDs a go in the mains...
 
Just got a set ordered today, hopefully I'll have them fitted in time for Le Mans......... Ideal for a late night blast from Mulsanne to Arnage[:D]
 
Just fitted a set of HIDs from ebay,£75, took 45 mins to fit, saw the same set for £149. WOW what a difference, this mod is highly recomended. Why pay through the nose....even comes with brackets for the ballast boxes.
 
Sorry, I'm being really lazy but I'll ask anyway! On the dipped beam, is the live feed the yellow wire that goes directly to the bulb or is it the brown that clips to the lamp housing? I'm making the bold assumtion that the yellow is live and the brown earth........As we all know, assumptions are the mother of all f**k ups so I thought I'd ask before getting the multimeter out or switching the system on, like I say, lazy!! [;)]

hi i got mine from hids4u i found them easy to order from, the fitting was a bit fiddly i didnt have the proper tools,
& they are great deal better then std bulbs !

Phil - Not being as wise (to ask) as you, I made that assumption, it they did NOT blow up! - So I think it right![:D]
