HELP!!! Please!!!

My handle was loose (outside) so I tightened the screw on the inside of door to tighten it up now the damn door won't open the door card is on there good. How can I fix this without cocking up the door card
 
It sounds like one of the rods has popped off the catch inside the door. You are supposed to be able to do this by undoing the screw you tightened up remove the handle from the door enough to fish about inside through the small gap the handle sits in. I've just done mine but I took the door card off and did it from inside. It's going to be a super pain. I'm in oxford if your anywhere near I would happily come and lend a hand.
 
yep! as greg said,same happened to me and nothing in the world will get that door open!,,took her in,broken rod diagnosed and replaced,,been great ever since,,good luck,jason p
 
Just remembered I took of the vent in the side of the door off and with long nose pliers I got the socket back on the ball it's a pain but I recon with handle out only slightly or a small mirror in the vent and torch to see what's going on its doable
 
At least with a 1984 car there aren't so many bits of steel plate stopping you getting at stuff... I am assuming here that neither inside nor outside handles work, but it is after you tightening up the outside handle that the problem occurred, and up until then they both worked?

I seem to recall I had something similar once, and ended up having to leave the door handle slightly loose...

I have seen interior handles where the hook on the end of the cable has come away from the interior handle - so it might be worth removing the internal escutcheon, and seeing if it has become disconnected, and seeing if just pulling the cable doesn't open the door...

Just a thought, and sorry to ask the blindingly obvious, but sometimes the obvious is missed, the door isn't locked is it?
 
Yep the handles worked perfectly before I tightened the blasted screw

Lol Iv done some stupid things before but never tried opening a locked door but this could be the first
Ill check again later.

Iv got myself a old bucket handle straightened out I'm guna have a fish around later fingers crossed I can get this door open
 
Just think I was guna tighten both handles up last night think ill be giving that a miss now
 
You were right I'd tightened the screw I a little tight so when you pulled the outside handle it just wouldn't spring back

Simply wond down window put bucket handle down pulled up on the lock
And it opened loosend the screw quart turn and it works as it should
