Just thought i would say hello and introduce myself, im Andy, 21 from Glasgow. I unfortunatly dont own a porche yet but i am hoping to buy a 944 turbo as a prodject this summer, spend some time and money getting it mint, by which time i hopfully will be old enought to insure it.

Welcome Andy!
A project car could end up costing you lots of money and heartache!! [] Might be best to look for decent early car, as they are really not that expensive. That way, you can enjoy the boooooooooooooost from day 1!!!! [:D]
All the best.

Welcome Andy, You can go back and edit your spelling mistake and no-one will know (then delete your second post for even greater confidentiality [:D] )

I would agree with Derek that it would be better value in the long run to buy a car that is ready now. Project Porsches can often cost thousands because at the end of the day it's still made out of Porsche parts and very few of them are a bargain []

However if it's the challenge and fun [&:] of getting one back to health then good luck and we are with you all the way. Anything to keep one of these fine cars off the scrap heap

ahh a handy little edit button. well here is the first question to you all. ideal i would like a 944 turbo cab', what sorta price do they start from? what could i pic up for say, 1k,2k or 3k? i saw a basic nasp for £750 on top gear or somin' like that, they bought it spent £500 on parts and some bodywork and sold it for almost 2k.

There's a 944 Turbo Cab advertised in The Scotsman just now, at £8995, which is way cheap!!! There were very few of them made, as it was just really a run-out model before the launch of the 968.
£1K, £2K or £3K will get you a rough 924, decent 924 or a good 924S!!!

Another wind up merchant!

Like going on the Ferrari owners site and asking em what sort of project 355 they can recommend for £5k or whether they should buy a Stradale for 11k.

Then asking in response what the most popular (sales wise) Posrche looks like Doh!

The Crow.

Welcome, Andy! You can get a decent 944 for £3k, but it won't be a turbo and you'll need to be very careful. There are some cosmetically good cars with nice shiny paint around that money that could easily cost the same amount again to put right.

Good luck, and I hope you get a nice one.

Just had an email from someone who has bought an S2 for £3,700. Looks nice in the piccies and even has Cups. He's making it into a track car.

My mate now owns my first Turbo. He bought it a couple of years ago (from his father, granted) for £3,400.

Why does Crowmann's post say 'awaiting approval'? Is he under some sort of screening, and if he is, who screens it?
Sorry, nothing to do with the thread, just curious.

Matt

Depends where you are. You can pick up an S2 cheap BUT it may need a lot of work to bring it up to spec eg mine (1990) could be had for £5k or so which is a lot but over the 6 years I've had it its had a new clutch, shockers, disks, radiator, starter etc cost that lot out then wonder why you can get on c £3k (or less). Best to spend as much as you can on a good one with a history Good luck performance wise it would be interesting to compare with M3

I'm not sure which M3 model the E30 is but if it is one of the more recent ones I doubt the S2 would be a match for sheer out and out straight line performance on paper, however on the track or street (i.e. real world performance) it would be more than a match. The track day's i've been on i've seen how good 968's are (which are basically 944 S2's for five times the price) compared with equipment that is much quicker in a straight line. I would have thought an S2 would be an excellent choice.

The E30 M3 is the original square boxy left hand drive only M3, depending on the model they have betwean 195 ish bhp and 230 ish bhp from a high reving four cylinder engine. It's the later E36 and E46 which got the 300+ bhp straight sixes, I would imagine that a well sorted S2 would be a close match.to an E30.

My brother's one has a full Milltek exhaust system, and cams, giving it somewhere over 200bhp although we dont know exactly cos he's never had it rolling-roaded. Its also completely stripped out so weighs a bit less than a standard one too.

I did wonder why 968s were so expensive, considering they seem to be basically the same car! I guess its just the mileage - most 944s Ive seen advertised have done well over 100,000 miles.

Not necessarily, there are plenty of 968's out there with over 100k miles on them. There were fewer of them made in the first place and with their up-dated looks, the younger age of the model and the association with the model of the 'club sport' brand seems to mean they command around 10-15k. The only thing they've got over the S2 engine is the variocam system which gives it around 240bhp (can't recall the exact power output) from the 211bhp of the S2. I like the looks of the 968 but that doesn't justify the price tag.

By the way in my earlier post I didn't mean to imply that the 968 is any better on track than the 944 it's just on the track day I went on mine was the only 944 out that day and the driver of the 968 was clearly more practiced at track driving than me - he was burning up the track - very impressive. I did try to keep up for a lap but after a hanful of bends I decided it was a one-way ticket into the gravel so I backed off a bit. He did have KW suspension and big black brakes fitted though but i'm sure some of it was down to driver skill!! There is no reason why a 944 S2 wouldn't be as good on track than a 968.

Well I'm not planning to turn it into a serious trackday car, although I will probably take it on a track or two [:D]

The awful-looking and bus-sized standard steering wheel will have to go though. If the seats are comfortable and supportive enough (and black) I'll keep them, but otherwise I'll put some aftermarket ones in. I really like the Cup 17" alloys, so if I dont buy a car with these already fitted they will probably be first on the list, and some nice tyres. And an upgraded exhaust too, because while I have matured a little bit, I still like accellerating in tunnels with the windows down, for example [;)][:D][:D][:D]
