Hello All

Just bought myself a 944 S2 and thought I'd pop in here and say Hi

It's going to be my daily driver, as I have other toys to play with, and from what I've read it's sounds like I've made a good choice.

I look forward to being able to ask you all any advice/questions in the future

Andy

Hi Andy and welcome! Good to see you're using it daily as well. You'll have to put a few piccy's of it up for us all to admire. [:)]

Cheers Alan

Got to get it all cleaned up first and then I'll pop up some pics [:D] I see you have an XR2, one of my other cars is a Mk1 Escort

Welcome Andy,

Cars like being driven every day, assuming they have a chance to warm up.

The MkI Escort is a truley great car, I loved mine. You shouldn't have as much problem with the 944 in chasing the dredded rust worm as potentialy with a classic Escort.

[:D] I hope not. The car's totally stripped at the moment awaiting bead blasting. No major probs just want it clean for next year.

Here are a couple of pics from Elvington in October

Welcome to the forum Andy (I love those wide wheel arches on the Escort)

The one main difference with the S2 as compared to other 944 is to make sure your camchain and tensioner slipper have been checked or replaced at some point.

This is totally seperate from the cambelt and balance belt, it is a chain that connects the two cams together. There is a plastic slipper on the tensioner that gradually wears into two grooves from the chain. Ultimately the tensioner cannot maintain the correct tension, then the chain stretches and the sprockets on the cams can get rounded off [] £££££ It can also snap which is even more £££££££££

Porsche have never, ever added this into any regular maintenance plan [] so once cars started to reach around 10 years old or anything over about 80,000 miles we started to see problems. Most independant specialists know all about this and will change the slipper and chain for around £200, or the complete tensioner for a few hundred more. [:)]

Or do it yourself here: [8D]

Berlyn Services run by Bert Gear the 944 tech Rep. supply a kit with all the bits and a new cam cover gasket for about £30

Thanks for the welcome Paul

The previous owner mentioned this to me and I've just been checking through the invoices that came with the car. There's an entry "Supplied & fitted new Timing Chain and Tensioner Guide" so looks like I should be OK there - phew. Definitely worth knowing about.

Welcome Stewart to you and your boy. You are definately in the right place as it sounds as if you may need plenty of advice in the future. I wish you well in the project and hope you are both pleased with the outcome. The S does have a reputation for a lot all go but no show. You really have to rev the nuts off of it to get anything out. But it sounds like a bit of a Father and Son quest and I kind of like that [;)]

Welcome Stewart, Tom & I are also a Father and Son team sharing a 944 S2.

A can thoroughly recommend the experience. [:)]

Hi Stewart, great to hear of another convert to the ranks.

Once you've taken some photos then please share them with us - we love to see new cars on the forum [:)]
