Heater only blowing cold

Hello everyone, I've just bought a Cobalt Blue 968 and the only real issue is that the heater only blows cold. I'm aware that it could be a number of issues like the thermostat, but would be most grateful if anyone can suggest how to investigate and diagnose the problem. What to try, where to look, - that kind of knowledge would be gratefully received. I've looked at Clark's Garage and other sites on the web, but was hoping a club member would be a better source. If it's anything like a 944 there are linkages on the side of the heater in the passenger footwell
that are held on with white plastic clips that are prone to breaking.
 
Vacuum powered valve next to the oil filter, just to add if the plasic clips break it defaults to hot!!!
