Headlight upgrade

I had a nasty surprise this week when I took the car for an evening drive - I couldn't see anything! Any recommendations re bulb upgrades vs new LED sealed units (e-marked)? Thanks.

I've not had to interfere with mine, but everything I have read suggests that the units themselves are up to the job and it is the wiring connection from the main loom to the lights that corrodes & increases resistance leading to a voltage drop to the lights. Sorting this results in much brighter lights.

I had an upgraded loom and it was ok, since gone for LED bulbs. It’s not that easy to find ones with the right cutoff and they’re probably technically illegal come MOT time, especially since I ditched the headlight washer system.

Main issue is how low the car is and you can’t beat physics.

Yeah, being low doesn't help. Another top tip is to make sure the lenses are clean which involves popping up the lights when washing it!!

Reducing resistance with new wires, cleaned earths etc. will help.

Aside from that I fitted some Osram Nightbreakers about 10 years ago and they were a definite improvement and are still alive and well. If you want more than that then it's some sort of bulb/loom upgrade.

Unfortunately, they will never be seen from the moon like a modern SUV and the modern SUV will also do it's best to blind you at any opportunity! [&:]

An upgraded loom with additional relays does usually improve things - kits were available from various sources and I believe our reg sec (Mike Pollock) did his own with a write up. There are also various light units with LEDs that might do the trick - I have noticed a lot of the electric conversions of defenders etc have new headlight units around the correct size. Hardly ever drive mine in the dark at the moment (or at all [:(]) so not looked into it other than as a casual observation!

Thanks for all the replies. I will check the voltage as that could be the culprit. I did buy e-marked LEDs for my 97 Defender, and I believe they are a similar size, so may pop one out and try it to see if it works.

One other check - which has caught some owners out in the past is washing them! If you routinely clean the car with headlights down they can be pretty filthy!

A quick google for 944 led headlights show a lot of (mostly ugly!) choices but then if you only get them out at night performance is second to looks!

(Edited to add just spotted I was seconding Stuart's washing suggestion!)
