Have bought a 964rs

Hi everyone,

After many months of research, i have finally bought and took delivery of a beautifull black 964rs.
Thanks very much to all those who helped me in the search (Des and Yoda in particular).

I went to Germany to take delivery yesterday. I drove throught the afternoon and the night the 1000 km (its fully run-in now!).

I have already so much to say about the car... If i could summarise it in a word: a beast.
Like a wild animal, it does not open up to 'strangers' that easily. The lack of power stearing (coming out of my boxster s) is the most dominating feature. It is so direct that sneezing causes the car to jump left-right on the road.

The power delivery is astonishing. All fairly normal until 4000 rpm. After? the animal awakes. Dr Jekyll etc....

I had to restrain myself so much to keep under the speed limits in France. It was raining which helped a bit.

Nonetheless, i have already been arrested for speeding by les gendarmes. 158km/h (100 mph) versus 130 km/h authorised.
90euros and two points on your license. Thank you very much!
Not bad for the first 12 hours with the car.

The car is totally standard with no roll-cage, no radio or speakers, no modifications at all and 45000 km.

There are a few things on which i could do with a bit of help...

1/ i leave in London wapping and was wondering if anyone knows who is the most convenient / nearby specialist to look after my car?
There is Tower Porsche just the other side of Tower Bridge, but i am a little reluctant to leave them my car (bit scruffy, and mostly 912 and classic 911s there).
Otherwise, i am tempted by Jaz, but it' s just a bit to far.
Any other great idea?

2/ After driving 1000 km and while arriving in London, i noticed a noise that was not there before: a sort of continuous noise coming from the rear... a bit as if i had left the hand break on... or like an old washing machine struggling to spin... I sort of thought it was a bearing at the rear giving up???? any idea anyone?? Is that already going to be £££ repairs?

3/ I will definitely get some music fitted for the occasional 'i am stuck in the traffic' and bored moments.... i know i know useless etc... but that' s the one luxury i need. Can someone recommand a specialist near me who is not going to trash the car and fit good equipment while respecting the inside?

I will try and post some decent pictures when i have figured out how to download mine.

In the meantime you can see it via the link below (they have used pictures of my car to advertise this one...):

you can click on the pictures to see them bigger...

Voila for now... anyone who can help me with the above: much appreciated.

Regards,
Eric.

ps: when' s the next trackday?

Well done Eric! At last! finally you can top looking and start driving.

Come to the Porsche Fun Days at Spa 24th-26th May you will love it!

I have door cards with original speakers if you want to swap? I have the original radio cassette too.

Charles

Welcome Eric!!

Just to whet your appetite, how about joining us at Oulton Park in March -www.easytrack.co.uk

eric I live round the corner from you in Deptford, unfortunately away next few days on the Piste with my little monkeys however pleased to listen to the noise (64RS FULL OF NOISES) ...........call me you have my number and welcome to THE LEICHTBAU! Would recommend GT One Chertsey.JZ Machtech not Tower Porsche.......

Eric,

Congratulations on the purchase.
And as a relative new-comer myself, Willkommen zur Familie RS!

Rich

Nice one Eric, enfin...as it were [;)] Over the net hard to diagnose, but the noise you describe is to be expected with the lightweight flywheel and lsd......have fun with your new car it sounds like a good one [:)]

Eric

I am delighted for you. The car looks a real beauty. In fact, the condition of the engine bay and under the bonnet gives me something to aim at with my car.

As for who to look after your car, I would agree with Des and suggest GT-One. I have never been there woithout seeing other RS's. They look after a lot, including some cup cars. Sure, they aren't on your doorstep but they are one of the closest who you can really trust. Another I hear lots of good things about is Jaz

Eric...congratulations on the purchase, been a long time coming and well worth the wait by the looks of things.

I used to live in Shad Thames just across the water from you and took my car to Jaz every time. Only had good experiences with them although some say estimated times can be optimistic but never had any problems personallyIf you leave at 7 am you can be up there and back in the City by 9...just jump on the Metropolitan line, very easy.

Never used GT One or JZ but hear good reports.....follow your gut feel with Tower.

Enjoy your RS !

Cheers,

Ben.

Congrats ericsi. Welcome to the big boys club.

Car looks awesome, looks like you bought a nice example of an appreciating classic.

Don't fit a radio.... especially if you have to carve holes in those lovely door panels...sacrilege......Do a swap with Charles the worst way.

good luck

Congrats on the new car, a perfect Xmas present to one's self!
Your noise could be a small stone stuck between caliper and disc or disc and guard. Happens to my 93RS quite often.

Hi everyone, i am absolutely amazed by all the nice words.
Thanks a lot too all!

Anyone near the wapping area is more than welcome to come for a beer / spin in the car (the 2 offers are mutually exclusive obviously [&:] or beer comes after).

Trackday-wise, everyone seems to talk about event far away next year... hopefully i make a bedford day in Jan!

One of the main reasons, why i bought the particular car is because of the community. And there it is...

*Charles, i do not want to swap the door cards. I was going to buy a second set with a hole from Southbound trimmers and keep the original just in case. But if you want to sell me yours second hand (at a good price [:)]), then why not?

*Melv and Charles, never been to Oulton park so why not? just need to figure out if dates work out etc... Regarding Spa, a definite yes. A legendary place i have dreamt to go for a long time but never driven there. As i said, Bedford is probably going to be my first call in the short term.

*Rich, are you the one who bought Yoda' s car? (if yes, please know that i hated you for about 48 hours when i heard that the car was sold to someone else than me... fortunatly i found another one!

*Clubsport-Paul, i do not think it is the light flywheel / chatter of the gearbox, because when the car freewheels in a down hill, the noise increases.

As MTBR says, i would not be surprised if it was a rock in the discs or something along these lines. (i hope it is something that small). I would be really p*ssed off if it was smthg else.

*Ben and Des and Simon, I will probably get the car to the tower guys to put the car on a ramp and have a quick look, but if smthg comes out as being serious, it will go straight to either JAZ or GT-ONE.

*Lee, i know what you are saying about the sacrilege, so i am scratching my head to see how i can do the least possible damage. Otherwise, i had a pilot-headset cancelling most of outside noises and an ipod most of the way through Germany and it worked a treat. It is just a bit of a chore to have smthg on your head all the time + it is illegal + makes you look like a right idiot. PELTOR sells headsests + intercom were you can plug your ipod and talk to your passenger (but does not make you look more clever...).

And i' ll try to post a picture...
Rgrds,
Eric.

Eric.

Finally you bought it. Like I said after we spoke about it I was surprised you were still hesitating.

The noise:
1. does the noise change with roaqd surface changes. If so just normal tyre noise. You can get a lot of this depending on tyre.
2. does the noise increase if you weave at slow speed and load up the car left and right. If so it may be a whel bearing. About £70 for bearing and couple of hours to fit. No big deal.
3. Sounds like its had a lack of use so the noise may even be just a dry drive shaft joint. You could have them checked.
4. Could be a gearbox bearing as well.

I can't diagnose further without more info from you or driving / seeing it.

The noise at low speed when turning ( bit like a coffee grinder) is normal, the Limited slip diff!
JZ Mactec have looked after mine for 6 years. I know they look after many RS,s and know them inside out.
Enjoy your new car!
Jeff

Eric,

I'm a different Rich (although Feroz was once trying to tempt me with his car).
I'm the one who bought Des's car when he bought his clubsport - and very pleased I am with it too.

Rich

Ahhhh ............. the eagle has landed. Enjoy it and looks forward to catching up soon.

Jaz looked after my car and have always been pragmatic and fair, Steve knows his stuff and there is one of the best Porsche bodyshps and a tyre / parts outfit accross the road.

GT One did the inspection on my car when I sold it and seemed good and were thorough.

I would say make the effort and build a good relationship with a garage and they will look after you well, don't take the nearest/easiest option.

Take care

Jeff, no it is not a grinding noise, and i do not think that it is the differential.
I brought it to the local garage (Tower as i mentionned it above) today to have a first look, and if no success to find a rock, or a disc cover too close to the disc, then i will take the plunge and visit one of the places recommanded above.

I think that it will be JAZ or GT-ONE depending on the most practical access from east London. I have heard great things from either.
And i will need a 'proper' place to look after the car in the future.

Richard, your car looks very nice indeed. And white is the 'cool' color these days. Apologies for assuming that you were the 'other one'...[:)]

Dapster, yes Auto Salon Singen have absolutely amazing cars in the shop. However, most are not theirs, they just sell on behalf of customers. The day when i went to pick up my car, the following cars were in the shop:
*Merc clk gtr roadster. Most expensive car in the shop at euros 2 million. 7 ever made.
*Bugatti Veyron. Brand new.
*Merc 300 roadster 1957.
*Maserati mc12
*gt40
*carrera gt
and many many other astounding car.
My car seemed to be the cheapest in the whole shop. It seemed a little out of place to be quite honnest.

This shop is about 50 miles away from Zurich (it is on the other side of the frontier in Germany though). If you ever go there, it is well worth a visit. Quite amazing.

Paul (RSR), i' d like that we meet up at some point. What' s the best way? pay you a visit? I would assume that you rarely come to London?
I also forgot to mention your name in the list of people to thank. So: thank you again for helping!

Yoda, shame you can' t make thursday... Look forward to show you the beast.

ps: i re-read my previous posts and noticed that i made a lot of spelling mistakes, so apologies for the poor writing... i have a good excuse after all.... sacre bleu.[:D]

ericsi, Well done on the car, looks lovely. Black looks stunning but its a challenge to keep it that way!

Regarding the noise, does it sound like the brakes are sticking on? If so it could be that the pads are low on the rear or the calipers are a bit seized. Either way its not too expensive.

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy (and everyone),

I brought the car to Tower, and they found... nothing...
Apart from the fact that the car was in 'lovely, amazing' condition (nice to hear but not very helpful in my case). And that i may be the 'Joanne of Arc of Porsche' hearing voices... but don' t we all hear funny noises in rs' s??[:D]

At least, John (who is a nice chap and am sure very competent for classic 911-912' s) advised me to go to one of the specialists if i was not entirely convinced.
At least he had a good look around the car (for free!) and reassured me on a few other items (good clutch, good bearings, good slip-diff, nothing interefering with the disc breaks like little rocks or others).

So following your recommandations (all of you), i liaised with Steve at Jaz and will pay him a visit in the new year.
And he seemed to have answers to all my questions. And i can guarantee i have an awfull lot.

Jeremy, yes, it sounds a bit like the calipers grabbing the discs... most plausible explanation until now.
Apart from that, you have a very nice car indeed Jeremy! Why are you ex-club member??

I am not even a pcgb member... should i become one?

Appart from that, i am a bit reluctant to go on holiday this year and leave the car away from me. I think i am in love (or maybe just an idiot)[8|].

Eric.
